I liked Treasure Island, White Fang, and things similar at that age, but I'm not a chick, so?

Uncle Eric series.

It's all non fiction.

Breaks down all kinds of things people should be aware of. Covers everything from the Roman Empire, WW1,WW2, how to run a a business, socialism, capitalism, the justice system, branches of government.

Well written and interesting. Pretty quick read too so you can screen them if your nervous about preteen political indoctrination

The hounds of the morrigan.
Modern kids get into an alternate reality quite by accident.
Written decades ago.
Irish myths and legends in an adventure vs the morrigan a traditional irish witch. Has a historical appendix.
I read it aloud with my 8 to 10 yr olds. Genius kids. Great readers. They were not the least into the appendix.

PS i tried to buy film rights from author but someone had already snagged them.
