Why is this a big deal anyway? My work gives us a certain number of off days. We can use them for sick, vacation, whatever we want this is the same thing

agreed, but devils advocate, how is taking a mental health day off going to help?
and why only 5 days, why not more? doesnt seem like taking 5 days off is enough

also this thread is hilarious because we just recently had a thread about how we as a society put too much pressure on kids and education and the OT was almost unanimous in agreement that we do, especially testing
yet here some are in this thread, completely mad about a school system trying to take some of that pressure off the students
never change OT

I have no issue with this. If you went to college then you would know just because youre absent doesn’t mean you’re excused from whatever work was presented and ate expectd to make the effort to learn it on your own.

Meh.
The prevalence of social media alone brings in a whole other level of pressure on kids today. But that’s a whole other discussion.
As far as the OP, it’s a good thing.
Right now our district allows 10 days excused by a parent note for sickness. They are also days that can be used for educational trips outside of the school, when military family members come home/deport, etc.
I work at a school that’s highly rated nationally and the kids already take mental health days under the sick note policy (the parents just say they’re home sick).
Anyone making a big deal over it is just full of faux outrage.

Nah, there's always been social pressure. Hell, beating the hell out of a person used to be acceptable. Now it lands you in Juvi.
Reputation has always been a thing.
My personal opinion is that a kid should be able to come and go as they please as long as they can make the grade.

You’ve never taken a day off at work just to “take a day”? Especially after a big project or a long stretch of particularly stressful work?

My point is there's even more of a stigma associated with "mental health" day. Just call it a personal day

One of my high school teachers was like this. I made I think a 98 or 100 on the first test with most of the class doing poorly. After that, I asked to go to the bathroom every day at the start of class and went to the mall(cafeteria) and chilled with friends until the last 2 minutes of class

Everybody knows what it is. The "mental health" stuff is just feel good justification.
There will be no stigma attached to taking a day.

Agreed.
Unfortunately for most students, the state strictly dictates what students can take days off for because of potential educational neglect and truancy. So it’s a bit different than just someone who is taking PTO at work.
In a perfect world, they’d be given X amount of days to use for whatever. Whether it be to go on vacation or to stay home sick. A doctor’s note should suffice for anything long term (most of the long term absences I see in teens are for mono or injuries).

My senior year I skipped Sr English for the last 6 weeks, turned in a paper and passed. Only had two classes though that year.
Knew a girl in the office who would change the absentee slip. She also did most of my paper.

If this is your point, wouldn't you want to reduce the stigma associated with mental health by, I don't know, calling them "mental health" days?

If you're going fishing? frick no.
It's a personal day. Like business.

Would you rather them shoot up a school? Mental health is a serious issue in this country. It doesn't make you more "manly" to pretend it isn't
The OT after the latest mass shooting: WE NEED TO TAKE MENTAL HEALTH MORE SERIOUSLY IN THIS COUNTRY!!!
The OT after literally any mental health initiative is proposed: THIS COUNTRY IS SO SOFT. EVERYONE'S A PUSSY THESE DAYS

Every day I lean a little more towards feeling like mental issues are a real thing. At one point in my life, my view was “there’s nothing wrong with you, get up, get out and take care of it. Rub some dirt on it l, you pussy.”
But how many days have you gotten up and didn’t want to do anything. How many days have you been at work and have gotten nothing accomplished? How many days where your mood has been complete dogshit and have not only ruined your day, but everyone else’s around you? How many days in your life have you take a “personal day?” and just said “frick all this” and took a day for yourself?
Probably quite a few.
In my opinion, the attitude in this country about mental health is very very negative. See the OP for instance. His view is as if it’s not a real thing. I assume he’s thinking only of the people that will only abuse this ability to take a few days. What about the ones that aren’t abusing it?
Maybe is we, as a society, try to understand mental health a little better, maybe the path we’re on won’t look so bleak? Maybe there won’t be so many pieces of shite roaming the streets. Maybe there won’t be so many drug fiends in your neighborhood or mine.
Convincing yourself that mental health is an issue MIGHT be a good starting point. I’m getting there because I thought it was BS at one point as well, but as many crazy people as there are today, there can only be so many answers.
