Thought this was going to be about the office — those open floor plans for “collaboration” suck arse

100% with you!! Drove me crazy when a running sink would drain out the TV (I'm easily distracted)

My favorite is the "it's so much better for entertaining" criwd..yea cause you know what's nice when having a conversation at a party? Hearing every other conversation at that party

Yeah, my last house was an open floor plan and will be my last. I'll downsize at some point, but I enjoy my own peace and quiet too much for that open bullshite

My ideal home would have been a duplex, wife and kids on one side and me on the other.

I appreciate that what I'm about to say is a small luxury borne of square footage, but my house has what I consider to be the best of both worlds:

That is similar to what we did. We have an open concept kitchen/great room/dining room but we have a separate home theater where you can be totally isolated. I built it with a drop down flat panel so if you want to just hangout and have TV on while you surf etc where you want more light you can do it, then you can lift the flat panel turn on the PJ and watch movies are TV when you are 100% focused on that. We also have a separate den but over the years it has basically become a museum for all the random objects de art that I think are cool but my wife won't let live anywhere else in the house.

Maybe some of us who have an open floor plan don’t give a shite about television. Almost every thread on this topic is people complaining about the inability to hear a television or the inconvenience of being around their children. It’s sad.

I have something similar. I have a basement, ihat's basically s huge den, an office, a actual den in the house and a ga=rage that's basically another living room. I don't have to se anyone if I don't want to.

Steaks and frying is done outside

I have a high speed vent with the blower in the attic for noise reduction. Some of you poors act like we have a Burger King kitchen going on while trying to watch tv...

I mean real cooking, with high heat searing, deep frying, and other methods that generate smoke

Or... Buy a proper hood vent.

I’m a designer/builder. Everybody we deal with wants open. I have plans that have separation from the kitchen. Nobody even cares to look at them.

I’ve seen open plans that were functional and looked ok. But I can’t stand it when the layout looks like they built the rest of the house and forgot the kitchen. Then decided to hang cabinets and a sink in the corner of the living room.

With two young kids I like the open floor plan. I can cook/clean and also keep an eye on them running around with space to play and them being gated in the area. It is a pain now that my daughter can reach on the counters and we have to be careful.

It makes it really easy for me to set dinner, grab them and throw them at the table, clean up while they finish eating, wipe them down, then throw them back in the living room to play while I finish cleaning before they go up to bathe.

It’s distracting when I’m trying to watch something on TV or read or whatever to hear all the cacophony of noises from kitchen, etc.

IF I ever move again, I’m going back to the old “den” model.

this sounds like a subtle brag that you have a house

I went semi-open. Designed my house myself, but I’ve designed everything I’ve ever built.

Mine is divided by an 8 foot opening so I could keep the lower cabinets and frame up both ends with a double pantry.

I would call ours semi-open also. Our living room, dining room and entryway are open. But our kitchen is its own room. It’s nice for having people over because they can hangout in the open area and not feel cramped and we can cook without the interruption and noise.

I think it depends on the size of the house.

Small house needs an open floor plan.

Big house - plenty of walls are great.
