It’s distracting when I’m trying to watch something on TV or read or whatever to hear all the cacophony of noises from kitchen, etc.

IF I ever move again, I’m going back to the old “den” model.

When will floor plans pivot back away from “open, open, open.”

I sort of appreciate the old differentiation of the various rooms.

Didn’t realize trailers had a den model.

What don't you enjoy about the smell of grease and visible smoke billowing onto you and into your tv viewing area?

I’m a designer/builder. Everybody we deal with wants open. I have plans that have separation from the kitchen. Nobody even cares to look at them.

I appreciate that what I'm about to say is a small luxury borne of square footage, but my house has what I consider to be the best of both worlds: I have an open floorplan kitchen and den, separated from a dining room and front parlor which flow into one another. If you want to congregate around the kitchen, you can. If you want to get away, you can.

Living in south La being exposed to hurricanes and tornadoes, I kind of like walls. Kitchen walls, den walls, living room walls. Big beautiful walls.

I assume people who want an open kitchen don't really cook. I mean real cooking, with high heat searing, deep frying, and other methods that generate smoke.

People who heat a can of Campbell's soup in the microwave for dinner probably don't see a problem with an open kitchen.

I’m kinda questioning how much time you spend in the kitchen

We are herd creatures.
Are there cycles in architecture?

I know fashion cycles over time.

Is the younger generation buying smaller homes with more efficient floor plans?

What are some “trends” you are seeing?

I don't know how it's going to work in reality, but the Barndo is getting a roll around tv base (like the stereos from the 70's) to where I can flip it around and watch it from the porch with the wireless sound bar.

Or you could have a double blower vent hood that can suck the smoke out without a problem.

Den plus Living Room ftw... especially when there isn't much "living" going on in the Living Room.
