While we are dreaming, at what point does it make sense to get a turboprop over a piston aircraft?

when you can double the cost(or more) everything mentioned here, and laugh about the expense.

Something fast, like a Bonanza or a Mooney.

Unlike cars, planes are OK to buy used. Even the most incompetent grandpa is going to be forced to use the correct motor oil for an airplane. There are logs and shite.

All kinds of LSA that will outperform a 172 for less money.

With the advent of diesel piston aircraft engines, there is no justification for a tp.

Do you really need insurance? You're most likely died in the crash

If you are paying 25,000.00 a year every year for an annual you are getting ripped off. The shop rate where I work is 100.00 per hour and we work on mostly turbine helicopters but do maintain a couple of amphibian Cessna's. I know getting parts from textron (Cessna owner) is insane but I'd like to see a copy of your last invoice because you are getting hosed.

less than $500,000) to fly 6 people

You’re most likely going to be looking used at that price point.

It depends on what you want to do with it. I was looking at buying a 172 or Archer or similar just fly around in and take friends to away games and the economics of it made more sense for me to buy a partnership in a plane versus outright ownership.

Edit: for 6 people a Piper Malibu is a good one to go for. Used in the mid $200s

If you are going to buy used be sure to get a pre-purchase inspection done by a neutral party mechanic. I've seen shite flying that should have been grounded and some shade tree maintenance that would curl your toes in 30 years of turning wrenches on aircraft.

A long time ago a cousin and myself looked into buying a small plane, we sobered up and decided against it though. Cocaine isnt worth it.

Neither one of us knew how to fly and we were just going to end up in trouble anyways.

Can one of you flying experts tell me what it would cost to buy a piper pa 12, and also the annual costs for upkeep/fuel/hangar/etc? I’m not interested in flying myself, just curious what my buddy is sinking into his new hobby.

If I won the lottery? I'd by a P-51, or a Corsair, or a P-47, or maybe a P-40.

The Malibu is way more than 200k and if you put 6 adults in it you can’t take enough fuel to taxi around the airport.

When you start talking about flying 6 men around, your choices are really really limited. I agree with the guy up there that said a 414 or a 421. You can actually take 6 people because they call themselves 8 seaters.

I don’t even like 5 other people so I don’t have to do that math.
