I don't have the money to buy an airplane, unless my lottery ticket hits, but the other airplane post got me wondering.

If you really wanted to buy a General Aviation aircraft ( less than $500,000) to fly 6 people, what would you look at? and Why?

Would you buy new or used? I assume you can get a used aircraft fully certified before purchase.

yep. maybe a 210 or 206. still limited tho. if you actually wanna put 6 people in and go somewhere, 500k is gonna be a tough budget.

Most used 206’s are worn the frick out. Those are work planes. And new ones are problem close to $750K these days.

Go to fight school get your pilot's licence and network around the airfield. Get to know something about each aircraft. Know what your buying and you know what you bought with your money.

It's not the cost of the aircraft that is expensive. It's the cost of keeping it flying. Geauxx can tell you how much it costs us to keep our TU206's in the air every year.

Just annuals on it are over $25,000. Total overhauls, reman engines once the Total hours are up are over $75,000. That's on a $150,000 aircraft.

We had multiple airplanes growing up - a few Skyhawks, a sundowner, and a few others.

It was neat and fun and all that, but it's expensive as shite.

If I was going to buy a new(er) plane I'd get something like a skylane. I don't even know if they make them anymore though.

it's crazy these old designs sell brand new for 600k(t182t, t206)

a baron is 1950's tech plus fuel injection and a LCD screen for 1.5 million bucks.

Old designs that have proven to be stable and structurally sound airframes that are forgiving to the less experienced weekender pilot tend to be in demand when the penalties for failure can be so severe.

I mean yeah. I get that part of it.

but if someone had told a GA flier in 1965 that this was it for GA airplanes development, that they would just get a little prettier and wayyyy more expensive and out of reach for the "everyman" he wouldn't believe it.

Man for 6 that budget and feeling safe are going to be tough. Maybe a fractional/shared ownership type deal on a nicer plane. Most planes sit an incredible amount of time. The down side to the shared ownership is everyone wants the damn plane at the same time.

If I HAD to buy something under $500k that seats 6 maybe an older Cessna 421 or 414 in really good shape with low hours. The problem is that is a really low price point for an aircraft able to haul that number of people with any level of comfort.

F flying 6 ppl.

My goal is to simply buy a Cessna 172 for around $50K. it will scratch my aviation itch just fine

You're just jealous that we're talking about things that can fly for more than 100 feet.

I'd want a PA-46 along with a g1000 w/AP

There's 2 at the airport I see all the time, they're sweet.
Might be a little outside the price range unless you find like a 2008? or something close
