Minimum wage and what that amounted to in 2015 dollars. (haven't done an analysis since then)
February 1968 (Johnson): $1.60/hr ($10.75/hr)
May 1974 (Nixon): $2/hr ($9.49/hr)
January 1975 (Ford): $2.10/hr ($9.13/hr)
January 1976 (Ford): $2.30/hr ($9.47/hr)
January 1978 (Carter): $2.65 ($9.51/hr)
January 1979 (Carter): $2.90/hr ($9.34/hr)
January 1980 (Carter): $3.10/hr ($8.80/hr)
January 1981 (Carter): $3.35/hr ($8.62/hr)
April 1990 (Bush): $3.80/hr ($6.82/hr)
April 1991 (Bush): $4.25/hr ($7.30/hr)
October 1996 (Clinton): $4.75/hr ($7.08/hr)
September 1997 (Clinton): $5.15/hr ($7.51/hr)
July 2007 (GW Bush): $5.85/hr ($6.61/hr)
July 2008 (GW Bush): $6.55/hr ($7.12/hr)
July 2009 (Obama): $7.25/hr ($7.80/hr)
So you are saying it shouldn't go up with inflation?

I'll say I'm against a $15/hr minimum wage bc of what you stated about the type of jobs. However, some of the companies that require skilled workers should pay their employees more. Problem is, illegals and other immigrants will come here and do some of their jobs for cheaper and the companies know this so they pay everyone in that position like shite.
They may not be the most skilled of workers, but some of them work their arse off because their job requires it and they still don't get paid shite. They should be the ones people should advocate for higher wages for. Not someone trying to buy a house who can only operate a cash register.

You are kidding right? You actually think minimum wage was enacted so less than qualified people could work? Really?

The reason you should oppose a flat $15 per hour minimum wage across the board is because of economics. $15 per hour in San Francisco is infinitely different than $15 per hour in Bumfrick, Kansas. That wage increase would put a lot of small businesses in rural areas out of business. If we're going to increase the minimum wage it should be tied to the Cost Of Living in each area.
I don’t think the federal minimum wage should be increased to $15. However....I feel it does need to be increased from $7.25.

Do you have any economical evidence to back up this feeling? If not, then your opinion is technically irrelevant. Feelings don't dictate policy.
I am being abrasive intentionally, not pointing you out just because; we have an entire generation that thinks their feelings are sufficient ammunition to enact wholesale changes to our national / state policies without regards to factual information and historical trends.
The claim that minimum wage should have risen with inflation is not a good argument anywhere but in a vacuum. Even though it makes sense theoretically, it doesn't mean it would work practically. Economics has a way of doing that. Raising the minimum wage could actually turbocharge inflation because a lot of the value of the dollar is placed on the value of labor. Labor is a fluctuating market, and setting the floor too high renders the cost of goods higher than they should be in reality. Short term benefits, long term damage.

Not sure why you're attacking one generation when minimum wage has been around in some form or another since the early 1900's, and has been debated since its inception. I don't think desiring sufficient pay to meet everyday needs is limited to just one generation.

So you think the minimum wage should be the same as it was 10 years ago?
Even though everything else has risen in price?

Nope. What I believe is that combating inflation is a battle that should be won before we make it worse by arbitrarily increasing the cost of unskilled labor, which will increase the cost of finished goods and services of all types, which in turn will decrease the purchasing power of $1.
Fix inflation, then we can talk about what minimum wage actually is. Raising minimum wage without fixing inflation is like thinking Tylenol will cure your infection.
I'm no economist, but I do work in the industrial sector dealing with the costing and pricing of durable goods.

quote:I see this criticism about "feelings" having no place in politics all the time, but if that were the case then there would be little left to discuss. Can you name a single political topic that has no place for a difference of opinion? And opinions are, by definition, not entirely based on facts. In other words, there is a component based on "feelings".
I am being abrasive intentionally, not pointing you out just because; we have an entire generation that thinks their feelings are sufficient ammunition to enact wholesale changes to our national / state policies without regards to factual information and historical trends.
The "feelings" component varies widely by topic and policy, but it happens that wages, our very livelihood, happens to hit very close to home for a lot of people.

All increasing the minimum wage does is devalue the dollar further.

Yes. Increasing minimum wage is like chasing your tail that you will never catch.
You raise minimum wage and everything adjusts and prices go up and you are back to square one except you have hurt the middle class more.

And that seems to be a pretty objectively good idea. The problem is that COL is extremely hard to measure, and it would lead to neverending debates about what is included in COL, constant gerrymandering of the calculation lines, etc.

The issue is wages didn't rise with inflation. Most older people lived in a world where you could pay rent, bills and a car note on a starting job.
$3 an hour in the 70s went far. $5 in the early 90s wasn't horrible.
Another myth.
