Kinda wonder if this goes back to before the proliferation of vehicles where families and students would arrive to Ruston or Baton Rouge via train to drop their kids at the blind school and so it was close to the tracks on purpose?

Police said the woman’s companion made it across the tracks safety.
The woman was reportedly walking home from a training class at the
Louisiana Center for the Blind.
The center is located less than a block south of the CPKC tracks.

I heard *every* single train that went by Neilson at all times of day, sleeping or not. That part of town, I know the noise would be reduced because they were going even slower than when they went by the Tech campus. But there's no way you don't pick up an audible clue of a multi-ton train car that's moving 15 feet from you.

I agree, the vibration can be heard for miles and they’re ears become very sensitive to noise because that’s their only clues to avoid danger (and a long arse stick)
Side note I lived in Ruston and once saw a ot 8 with a cane walking blind, I had to make the block.

It likely struck her and knocked her to the side off the tracks. A person had little to no shot of surviving this, but it's not like her body is just going to evaporate.
