you know how the Old Fashioned way of doing things is usually the best option?

This is a prime example. Mothers shouldn’t work

That'd be an awesome notion if most people were able to obtain a cost of living on one salary that could support a family of four.

My son in law teaches chemistry at a community college. I know that's a far cry from the OP, but FYI, I facetime talk with my daughter, and he is constantly on Zoom with students. He has it far rougher than pre-virus.

We are back to in person school in TX. I do find it funny that you guys all think that private school is better than public education. If you live in a decent area, public school is typically superior. The only exception is if you are going to a Newman type school. I know several teachers who got let go from public school system or couldn't get hired in the first place, find a home in the local private school.

people that pay for private school will always find the worst version of public school to justify the cost to themselves

Just depends on how well the public schools perform in your area. Public isn’t a real option for us.

I just looked up the public option..and:

72% of students are economically disadvantaged.

How’s that even possible?

Then they do "parent directed" reading, music, math, and art. This means the parents teach them to read, learn songs, do math, and do art projects.

I hope the parents can get a refund on all taxes to support public schools since they are doing the teaching instead of the teachers.

That's it. We're paying our city teachers to print off worksheets, have a 10 minute roll call, and look at pictures on kid-facebook.

Not sure I want teachers my age face-booking their students.

This whole deal is a perfect time to restructure education. It would make the system so much more efficient.

Tie funding to the student and not the school. Give the kids the money instead of the district so they get to decide what school works best in their area. All of a sudden schools have to compete for the tuition dollars and cant just mail it in.

School not open due to covid but you still want to go to school? No problem, you get to go somewhere else.

I would also allow folks to tap into that money for home schooling. If you want to home school your kids, you should be allowed to use that money to purchase resources just the same.

You would be surprised at what 1st grade is like now. Everything has gotten faster as far as what they're doing in school. And it seems like the play time keeps shrinking more and more.

So true. I couldn't believe my daughter had more than and hour of homework everyday plus reading time everyday.

She's about to start 3rd grade. She had over two hours of homework a day in 2nd grade and I'm sure 3rd will be even more.

you can support a family on a 50 or 60K budget, or at least that’s what this board tells me

Yep same here. There were word problems that my son had on his math homework in the 2nd grade in which you would need to solve for x using basic algebra. Keep in mind, this is the 2nd grade.

When I was in 2nd grade, math was addition and subtraction. Greater than and less than.
