DC was my favorite trip I've ever been on by far. My honeymoon was in Rome but I was 24 and didn't really appreciate it for what it was.

i think every generation say that about the next generation. I think you only realize how valuable life is by having some of it pass you by.
with that said, there is nothign wrong with using your phone assuming you do other stuff.

It's the crowds, lines and the people that I have a problem with. I dont really like people and the only kids I like are my own...
same...its why I have never really cared to go
Careful planning makes all the difference. We went for Easter one year when Easter and spring break were far apart from each other. Nobody was in the parks. We literally could get off a ride, walk around to the entrance and were back on the ride the next go. One of the attractions at Epcot looked closed. Nope. Just empty. We just walked up and went through. At the river raft ride at Animal Kingdom, the cast member didn't even make us get out of the raft, there was that much nobody there. She just let us stay in the raft and sent us back through as much as we wanted. Plus, you can just go to the World Showcase and get schnockered without having to deal with people and their crotchdroppings.
Disney World is fricking awesome if you go when there's nobody there.

Adults are just as bad.
Go to any dance recital, ball game, etc. It's full of mombies taking pictures the entire time.

I actually took a picture while at home during Christmas of my nephew (10), brother (36), Dad (61), and Grandma (82) all sitting around the table, and all were staring at either their phone or iPad
That's awesome

I agree. I found myself spending way too much time on my phone looking at social media. Recently I deleted all of the aps from my phone and sleep with my phone downstairs. Actually bought an old school alarm clock! This has made a huge difference in my time each day. I'm really enjoying the purge!

So just to play devil's advocate here...
You believe that the most fun thing you can do at Disney world is to watch other people. But when those people are watching other people more efficiently on their phones, it's a problem?
It kind of sounds like you're upset that technology is leaving you without as many people to watch, despite the fact that you could watch WAY more people by using that same technology. If you chose to.
But I do agree with the general point; we seem to be trading out strong connections with the small number of people around us for weak connections with many people around the world

"Favorite thing to do" was more tongue in cheek. It's still entertaining though.

Social observation is one of the oldest forms of research as well as one of the most insightful. As for technology, I love everything about it. The advancements made in just the last decade or so will be forever life changing. Still doesn't mean there won't be pitfalls here and there.

It's certainly seems to be heading that way if we're not already there in some respects.

I have three kids. Pimp Jr is like a 70's kid. The neighbors call him "The Mayor" b/c they think he knows enough adults to be the mayor. He was raised as a free range kid. He goes where he wants and he has this Cosmo Kramer serendipity quality.
My kids are now 18,15 and 13 and we have NEVER had a video game other than Wii when it first came out. Two of mine are musicians so they are ALWAYS making music or talking about music.
That said, my youngest is like this description in the OP. I guess I failed with her in that regard.

Hasn't the older generations always found something like this with the younger generation?
60/70s- what was it rock n roll and weed? Just smoking dope and listening to music in the room.
80/90s was video games...
I remember going to the doctors' or in a public place with seating. Most the time the adults were buried in books, magazines, or newspapers and weren't talking to others.
The only thing I see different now, is like previously said, the adults are engaged in the same activities.

Actually.. they're more connected to each other and to what's going on in the world than you ever were.
The world passed you by. The reason they're looking down into their phones is so that it doesn't pass them by.
