Sounds pretty ridiculous to me. But having drug paraphernalia in your car and consenting to a search is pretty stupid. Doesn't excuse taking their assets, but surely we at least agree with that.

And I guess I should disclose that the war on drugs is stupid IMO. But the laws on the books are the laws on the books, so I can't be too mad at them being enforced.

Yes you do.

Yes you did when you said this sort of thing only happens to people who "go out looking for it".

The county’s district attorney, a fifty-seven-year-old woman with feathered Charlie’s Angels hair named Lynda K. Russell, arrived an hour later. Russell, who moonlighted locally as a country singer, told Henderson and Boatright that they had two options. They could face felony charges for “money laundering” and “child endangerment,” in which case they would go to jail and their children would be handed over to foster care. Or they could sign over their cash to the city of Tenaha, and get back on the road. “No criminal charges shall be filed,” a waiver she drafted read, “and our children shall not be turned over to CPS,” or Child Protective Services.

Every last motherfricker involved in this criminal scheme should be facing everything from corruption, theft, blackmail, to RICO charges.

I can agree with like 60% of that. It counts.

That doesn't include the really outrageous story of a Philly DA seizing a person's house because his son sold a very small amount of drugs out of it.

quote:

The nightmare began when police showed up at the house and arrested their 22-year-old son, Yianni, on drug charges -- $40 worth of heroin. Authorities say he was selling drugs out of the home. The Sourvelises say they had no knowledge of any involvement their son might have had with drugs.

A month-and-a-half later police came back -- this time to seize their house, forcing the Sourvelises and their children out on the street that day. Authorities came with the electric company in tow to turn off the power and even began locking the doors with screws, the Sourvelises say. Authorities won't comment on the exact circumstances because of pending litigation regarding the case.

Police and prosecutors came armed with a lawsuit against the house itself. It was being forfeited and transferred to the custody of the Philadelphia District Attorney. Authorities said the house was tied to illegal drugs and therefore subject to civil forfeiture.

In two years, nearly 500 families in Philadelphia had their homes or cars taken away by city officials, according to records from Pennsylvania's attorney general.

CNN

Shocker: no charges filed against the homeowner.

I don't like that story at all, but we are getting away from cops stealing all your money on the side of the road with no cause.

Fair enough.

You'll then be interested to hear about another dicksonian practice formerly prevalent in NYC but still prevalent elsewhere, where a person pulled over for DWI gets incarcerated and the bail set so high he can't get out. Meanwhile, while still in jail awaiting trial, the car he was driving is siezed and sold. Only once he gets out he learns that lost in civil court and he doesn't have a car. Criminal charges were often dropped only after the civil trial was complete.

In other words, if you charge a person with enough crimes, you can seize anyone's car because they cant fight it in court, regardless of guilt.

There is nothing obtuse about it. I wouldn't drive a vehicle that I bought while it was still titled to a stranger. That's asking for trouble.
You're being a argumentative arse now.

We know that every cop won't be fricking over every single person stopped. Some people will be royally fricked in the arse by this, though. That's a problem.

I can agree with that.

Would you then agree that innocent people should be concerned it could happen to them?
