The Oklahoma Department of Public Safety has purchased several devices capable of seizing funds loaded on to prepaid debit cards to aid troopers in roadside seizures of suspected drug-trafficking proceeds.

The vehicle-mounted scanners are also capable of retrieving and storing limited account information from other cards as well, such as banking debit cards, credit cards and “payment account information from virtually any magnetic stripe card,” according to the website and patent documents of the device manufacturer, Texas-based ERAD Group Inc. ERAD stands for Electronic Recovery and Access to Data.

The card readers will not be used to randomly swipe motorists’ gift or prepaid cards, Vincent said, but only in cases in which the trooper suspects criminal activity is taking place.
quote:
According to ERAD Group’s patent for the device, law enforcement can determine the balance of money in an account associated with a prepaid card that is part of branded “open loop” networks such as Visa or MasterCard or “closed loop” cards that only allow purchases at a single company, such as gift cards.
When the card is scanned by the officer to check the account balance, the system disguises the balance request as a typical vendor request to prevent alerting suspects that law enforcement is checking the card, the patent states.
Once the card’s account balance is determined, the officer can use the device to freeze the funds, preventing withdrawal or use of the money in the account, or seize the funds by having them transferred to a law enforcement financial account, the patent states.

Just be careful about how much money you have in your bank account, and you have nothing to fear.

It's called a Square. Been around for years. It's not James Bond shite.

So they've gone beyond just stealing cash from people to now stealing money from their bank accounts?
Posted on 6/8/16 at 1:02 pm to NYNolaguy1
And they wonder why people hate them.

Square doesn't tell you how much is in the account, and doesn't withdraw $$ without your consent.

This is an incredibly disturbing invasion of privacy.

Only from those suspected of criminal activity, not even charged or convicted. So if a cop thinks you did something, he can take all of the cash in yo bank account using this device.

So now they can shoot your dog, kill you, and rob you all at the same time?

What the hell is the point of this? Since when did drug dealers start using gift cards and bank accounts? This sounds sketchy as hell.

Cue the " if you are not committing a crime, you have nothing to worry about so no need to overreact" crowd.

Why go after cash when you can take whole bank accounts with the swipe of a card? It makes sense to me.

well I will avoid OK more now

Oklahoma sure does love big intrusive government. Bunch of liberals I guess.

Is that not anyone in Oklahoma who has the cajones to point out how bad this is? I really don't understand why this is not front page news and why everyone -conservative and liberal - is not up in arms about this.
This is worse than traffic cameras. I really wish I was a better wordsmith because this is just beyond reason and belief, but I can't express my shock very well.
ETA: Just what we need - the police with the right to rifle through the credit cards you keep in your wallet (along with membership cards, etc.). This is dictatorship kind of stuff.
Wait until some small town, G.E.D. cop gets one of these.

If OK has it, most likely it's coming to a police precinct near you very soon. Just imagine the money they can make off of this.

Can't wait for the people who have no clue what this does and assume all cops are gonna steal your money
Forfeitures are bullshite and always have been. It is a terrible way to raise money for the government. Doesn't matter whether they will still your money - some state trooper taking your cards and running them for any purpose is terrible. Do you really think that goon has any business looking at your finances?
I'd end up arrested - because I would fight any cop wanting to go through my credit cards.
