From watching the video, that didn't sound racist to me in the least bit. News anchors constantly try so hard to be funny, and usually it falls super flat and it's just nothing but pure awkwardness. Co-anchors constantly make playful jabs at each other. You would have to be reaching hard in order to see that comment as malicious intent. If she was legit racist, then I'm sure the coworker would already know, and he would use this time as sure-fire way to get her fired. That wasn't the case.
That being said, come on people, please be smart and use common sense. Due to the historic context of this country, making comparisons between black people and apes are a huge no-no. Everyone should know this by now. If you wish to try and be fake funny, make a comparison with a Kangaroo or a bird or something, idk. But if you are making a comparison between a black person and an ape in 2019 in the public sphere, then you are just asking for trouble.
