So I’m at an oil change shop in the bay waiting for them to change my oil. Haven’t even opened my hood yet. Technician comes over to my window with an air filter, shows it to me and recommends that it be changed. I decline and watch him take the filter to the adjacent vehicle and reinstall it where he got it from.

Change my own oil so I don’t have to deal with that crap.

You deserve to get screwed by going to those places. No way I'm letting some underpaid grease monkey do maintenance on my vehicles.

If this story is true then call them out. Zero percent chance I’d sit there idle and let some dude scam me.

That’s coming from the most docile person ever. I want no confrontations ever but also know when to draw the line in the sand.

Benny's does that all the time, upcharge for air filter, transmission flush, fan belt, fuel system cleaner, you name it.

I just change mine every other oil change. Don’t care what they show me, if it’s not time, I just say no. It’s not difficult.

Go to a local mom and pop place that only takes cash/checks and has monthly charge accounts for their “good” customers. Your vehicle will appreciate it.

Similar thing happened to my mom about a year ago at a local shop. She took her car in to get the oil changed and the technician came in with an air filter that was dirty and had a leaf stuck in it. The guy told her that she needed her filter changed. She politely declined.

A few months later she had to run a different car up there for oil and the same technician came in and told her that the air filter needed to be changed. He showed her the EXACT SAME dirty air filter with a leaf. She called him out on it in front of everyone in the shop. The technician started backtracking and making excuses about it after she kept pressing him on the issue. She ended up calling management and let them know about it. Of course they did nothing.

Needless to say we have never been back to that place.

Last month had an oil change done at the dealership where I purchased the new vehicle. SUV has 16k miles on it. Their email system sent me an alert during the oil change that the air filter needed to be changed.

I decline and the service manager comes over and tells me it is “really dirty” and I should consider. I look at her and explain, this is the first oil change and the vehicle is still brand new. I’m not replacing the air filter. That’s dumb.

As I am leaving, she comes to me and explains that her technician “hit the wrong button” and it was an error. I then asked her, is this your way of making something off of my service trips since oil changes are under warranty currently?

Lost all trust in my dealership that day.
