Well I do it, I don't try. So perhaps you are correct.

From a numbers perspective, I can change 6 quarts of full synthetic and filter for 40-50. That same oil change would be over 100 anywhere else, 200 at the dealer.

I can change 7 quarts of synthetic motor oil and filter in my truck in about 40 minutes. 20 of that is rounding up the tools to do it with. It costs me about $70. While I am under the truck I can grease what few fittings there are and inspect it for leaks, rust, whatever. $70 and about an hour after buying the stuff, finding the tools and changing it. It would cost me about $130 and would require at least 2 hours but more like 4-5 most times for anyone to do it. The fastest I ever had it done was being at WalMart an hour before they opened and I was third in line then. Even if it cost me more the time required is outlandish. Its easy to do and you know its done right.

A reputable dealer would accept receipts and onboard computer information about oil change reminder re-setting. It is entirely possible a person could cheat that but who would go to the trouble on the off chance that they will need a new motor at any point in a new vehicles service life? They demand they do the service so they can upsell you and deny claims because you declined a $150 air filter change.

A lot of men would claim that a man who gets taken advantage of has it coming for not knowing any better. That is some BS. There is an ethical standard that is expected in society...just because someone may not know any better than to pay $50 for an air filter that costs $12 and takes 5 minutes to replace is no reason to dismiss them being over charged.

I always change my own, on all 3 vehicles.
Mobil 1 full synthetic and a decent filter (not the cheapest) for about $40, vs not knowing what the hell someone else is going to do.
Takes little time or effort, and I can check everything out under the car while I am down there.

I do my own brakes, calipers, even did my coilovers recently

Seriously, changing your own oil is simple and cost effective. I save about $50 on my truck and about $25 on my wife's car. Not a pile of money but it has to be done and it takes less time to do it myself.

I do brakes on bunches of peoples cars. The most difficult part is getting the rotors off. I can do a 4 wheel brake job on just about any vehicle (as long as there aren't any drums on the dam thing) in about 90 minutes and the parts usually cost about 1/3 of what they would charge at a shop and it doesn't require the vehicle to sit at their shop all day. Disc brakes are about as simple as simple gets. My wife can do her own...she won't because she is a woman and why would she...but she has and can. My 24 year old son who barely knows the difference between a phillips and a straight bladed screw driver can do his own...he doesn't because daddy will do it but he can. 90 minutes and about $200 in parts if I am replacing the rotors compared to a day of the thing being in the shop and $600 is a no brainer for me.

I am no mechanic. My issue is that no one at a dealership is a better mechanic and rarely is there one at a locally owned shop other than the owner and he ain't out wrenching on cars he has rummy's just like the ones at Tires Plus doing the work. None of them can do anything outside of replacing parts, I can do about 90% of that myself. They know nothing about troubleshooting...neither do I but I ain't making $100 bucks an hour to scratch my arse and stare at the damned thing. If you ain't able or willing to maintain them yourself you are going to have to buy them more often or be subjected to rolling the dice and taking your chances with a shop. I am too cheap to roll the dice...I will do what I can and have often bit off and completed much more than I should have simply because in my experience they know about what I know and that ain't much.

Just make sure all the work is done...kind of like sending food back and they spit in it. Or you can just do it yourself to make sure its done right

You gotta start speaking up for yourself man. Quit typing it to us and let him know loud and in front of people. You would be amazed at how good that feels. That's an easy one.

Only with a reputable dealer

This is key. It's been my experience reputable dealers are usually family owned and who are invested in their local communities. While not always perfect and mistakes happen, they usually make things right with customers in the end.

I highly recommend having your vehicle serviced at dealership especially if your vehicle has warranty coverage remaining.

They still exist in the Year of Our Lord 2024. Just mainly in places where Sonic is the only fast food option and the newest fire truck in the VFD fleet (the one that’s 15 years old) is used for every parade the town has.

I had just had brakes changed two days ago. Went to Auto Zone, priced them, then to Wal Mart. Express Oil started their crap .....Need a new Cabin Filter, reached over "You mean like this one?" Need a new air filter ....."This one?" Never touched the windshield wipers ......You need new wipers "Imagine that, they jumped in the cart Before I left the store."

They left me alone ......

The beauty of driving a fleet truck .

“Sir , your air filter is dirty”

“That’s not my air filter “

“Uh?”

“It’s belong to fleet. You’ll need to show them”

Dude walks away.

A few years back I took my Tahoe to a local car repair place that I will not name (Sun Devil Auto). The tech comes out and said I need a new oil drain plug because mine stripped and I was hemorrhaging oil. In all honesty I did notice a few drops on my garage floor. Estimated repair cost to retap and replace the plug- $700. A quick Google search showed a new oil drain plug was about $10 at a nearby NAPA and even cheaper on Amazon, which I pointed out to the service manager in front of customers in the waiting area. I told them to frick off and put the old drain plug in and made it clear to everyone waiting that I was being scammed. Ordered a new drain plug and a thread repair kit for about $40 total from Amazon, fixed it myself (thank you YouTube) and never had an issue again. frick Sun Devil Auto.

You will really be pissed when they deny your warranty claim on some technicality after you spent all that time and money having the dealer service.

Those mother frickers lie more than attorneys.

Dont act all smart if you’re servicing it at the dealership in the first place.

Just worry about your battery dying, $20k fender benders, shitty chargers and lack of chargers, not being able to haul anything not even a bike without losing 40% power in an hour.

Yea, that oil change is so bad…
