I go by the manual but I would also periodically check the breakdown of the oil you are using by sending it off to blackstone labs. This is more important if you have a higher performance engine (high compression, frequent high RPM, etc).

I use SWEPCO and change once a year I guess.

Consumer Reports did a extensive study on this using a taxi fleet for test vehicles. Conclusion, no benefit to doing anything other than what the manufacturer recommends.

Most people are extending drain intervals but many don't check the oil level often (if ever).
I have an entire computer system that's smarter than me devoted to making sure all my levels are ok for the vehicle to operate smoothly.
My truck is 3.5 years old and I'd bet I haven't opened the hood myself 5 times

I change the oil when the car tells me the oil needs to be changed. If it doesn't want it, I don't change it.

depends on the vehicle. my porsche was 24 months or 20,000 miles.

my 2004 Volvo said 10,000 miles in the manual and only specified conventional oil. Go by the manual, not the mechanic who has an interest in getting you in quicker.

Briefly had a Mercedes Benz that was something crazy like 20k ... went to have the oil changed and found out it used twice as much oil as a regular car.

Does anyone remember Lynn Dean from St Bernard Parish? He was a boat manufacturer (Elevating Boat, Inc.) and got into local politics when he was about 65 or 70. He was an engineer and extremely frugal with public dollars (and his own). He was elected to the parish council, and was parish president and a state senator for a while.
At one point, when he was a councilman or president, it seemed like all he wanted to talk about was the oil change interval on parish vehicles. I don't remember the exact figure, but he believed oil changes were only necessary every 20,000 or 30,000 miles. He swore up and down that he only changed the oil in his company vehicles that often and it saved him X dollars every year, and he would quote projections on how much the parish could save annually.
I was always entertained by this old guy getting worked up about oil changes.

I've had oil changed about every 6,000 miles for many years.

I do ours every 5000, full synthetic. Mine 'cause it is now close to 200K miles (suggested every 8000), my wife's 'cause it's easier to keep track of 5000 for her and me. I just take care of the other regular maintenance when it's due.

Synthetic oil doesn't last any longer than conventional. It can take more heat, but you have a cooling system on your vehicle that keeps it at a optimal temperature. You really have to worry about particulates from burning dirty fuel more than using a more expensive oil.

10k synthetic
don't forget to get tires rotated every 5k though.

Bypass filter, blackstone, 30K plus easy. 172K miles 7 oil changes. Added benefit of being able to see what is in your oil. Can see problems coming.

I remember the oil change stuff well - especially with the fire trucks. The parish council was passing ordinances forcing him to change the oil. He would veto it. Then they would override. Then he would tell them it was an abuse of their power.
