So is AI taking the jobs?

I don't think so. Its more just eliminating redundancy. Mergers lead to staff reductions.

O&G salaries have not moved in almost 20yrs. Those bonuses are not guaranteed and highly variable.

fact. Salaries start off high, but they stagnate quickly. And raises are few and far between. My bonuses have been infrequent and dependent on market performance. That said, when things have been good, the bonuses have been very good. Definitely not an industry for those who depend on consistency or have a hard time adjusting to harsh realities.

no better tools. I mean I guess you could say AI but its more things are much more automated and remote vs everything having to be done by hand. Its not traditional AI

yes

the old days of "being close to the wellhead" means you are safe are pretty much over, at least from a physical sense

with automation, route by exception is more prominent than ever

Well, since I work for CVX and I’m looking at our pay grades as I type. I’m pretty sure I know what the pay is. Also, the 9,000 number for Chevron is also BS.

$206k salary with a $50k bonus, another $50k in stock, and having your 401k matched the full 6%...I know that ain't OT Baller money, but I could think of worse ways to fund a living.

With the low cost of living in most oil rich areas you could make this, live like you make 125k a year, and retire at 50 a solid millionaire and live off your investment returns with a low stress side gig to keep busy

Other Industries have caught up or surpassed O&G pay. With the constant stress of the industry I would not recommend anyone to join the industry. We are going through layoffs currently, this is 5th I have been through, at a rate of a layoff every 2-4 yrs

Sounds like you are in the wrong section of the industry and / or a poor employee.

I have been extremely blessed and lucky, but I have 25 yrs in the business, never was around a layoff, and annual income has increased every single year. Make enough to comfortably support 4 kids, a wife and everything they have needed and then a lot more. Wife hasn’t worked in 15 years either. Oh btw, I have 14 days off in a row every month. With PTO and holidays I probably only work 4 to 5 months a year.

I would take the oilfield over many other jobs any day.

Upstream jobs there grew for three straight months into May, then reversed hard in June, down 1,500 to 2,000 positions, one of five negative months this year. And yet Texas posted 10,409 job listings in May, up 6 percent from April, more than any other state. Houston alone had nearly 2,700 listings.

Upstream, I’m not sure if we have ever been busier. Maybe just pure location proximity luck, but whatever.

Downstream engineering now comes from Malaysia. Mechanical work planned from India. Payroll done in Argentina. All decisions centralized to HTown.

I lived in the oil patch for 5 years but did not earn my living in it. I would say, just based on anecdotal evidence, that maybe 1 in 1000 oil field hands take this advice. I would also posit, again from anecdotal evidence but also first hand experience in the building trades, that working in the oil patch at 50 is damned unusual considering the physical nature of the work and the lack of obviously over 50 year olds working in the oil patch....

My team is chasing less rigs total than we were prior to the 2015/16 downturn, yet no one is sitting around twiddling their thumbs.

Just a different game these days.
