Men like Julius Caesar went on arduous military campaigns. They were rarely fat. Then sculptors and painters would idealize them further.

Someone had to have been that big for the sculptor to know what it looked like though. If you look at pictures of manual laborers from 100-150 years ago they were skinny. Even the early bodybuilders didn't have that kind of size and definition.
The answer is aliens.

Ancient Greece had very little in common with the 1800s common man
They lived in abundance and had time to philosophize and even workout. They could eat a surplus of calories
“No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.”

What gives? Were these depictions accurate? Or were they enhanced to make them even larger that life so they could be remembered?
Id go with this. They were probably functionally strong, like a carpenter or someone who does a specific manual labor. But I doubt they had fitness model physiques.

I don’t really see those statues looking like the over the top bodybuilders today. But they were built.
The one thing I can point to as of why :
These men were upperclass so they had access to meat year round.
They lived thousands of years ago.
- No phones,TV,Video Games, Internet, air conditioning, fast food, etc.
They also trained even back then for enjoyment or as part of the military.

Maybe they were growers, and not show’ers?

True story... All of the Greek statues have small weiners because people with big ones were considered stupid at the time.

That’s another thing that was interesting. Men didn’t pride themselves on their cock sizes the way men do now.
In Greece, it depended on what circle you were in. If you were a soldier or an occupation that required discipline and composure, a compact unit was a sign of order and willpower. If you hung out among some of the philosophers and their schools, not only was a big schlong desirable, you were expected to let the other men in the group have their fun with you. In some of the philosophical schools, it was considered a privilege of the teacher to enjoy his student. Glad the Romans put an end to THAT shite.

You enjoy a penis up your rectum don't you?
That's the only explanation for starting this thread.

Socrates I believe spent time as a soldier even when he was in his 50s and 60s. Having older soldiers was not uncommon

Not quite.
In Athens at least, they didn’t condone what they saw as having gay relations. However, they had a much much much looser definition of gay relations.i.e. As an apprentice, jerking your master off was not gay.
Sticking your dick up someone’s arse was gay and not socially acceptable
