Damn the entire country got fat as frick. Now that I think about it, when I was a kid I used to point out fat people. Now there’s so many that they don’t stand out

I went to visit my son at college a few weeks ago. The amount of lard asses I saw was staggering. I’m not taking about just big-boned, I’m talking about blobs of jello.
It was disgusting.

Parents are too lazy to cook, raising kids on fast food. Fat kids become fat adults. Rinse and repeat.
and people are freaking too lazy

People in here bring up some good points as the causes. But I think it’s a pretty complex and messy how we got here.
First off, foods by corporations are intended to be addictive. If you want to solve obesity, this has to be acknowledge. Big companies spend billions on R&D and lobby to make the food addictive from putting in the right ingredients, to color, to the sound of that bite, to the mouth feel. You add the marketing involved and the social aspects of eating, the psychological pleasure and positive reinforcement to keep eating.
It’s more than just “lazy parents”. When you have food companies spending billions yearly vs families who are not that educated in food, guess who’s going to win? The kids especially in single parents, low income homes have no chance. They are trained with food addiction from an early age. That behavior to over consume processed food becomes second nature.
In addition, our culture wants everything easy and quick. This is not just with food for everything else. Look at advertisings. “Lose 10 lbs in 7 days, retire early by doing these 3 things”. You add that with the over availableness of addictive process food, we are where we are.
That’s just the tip of the iceberg. I don’t know how or if ever the US will solve this. I know that saying “eat in moderation” is not going to do anything. People been saying it for 30 years now.

The US government created the food pyramid in 1992. Coincidence that obesity rates skyrocketed since then? I think not
Conspiracy theory alert!!!
The US government created the food pyramid to fatten up the population. A fat and lazy population, is a controllable population

I saw something a while back that showed that the least healthy state (Mississippi) in 1996 had a lower obesity percentage than the healthiest state today (Colorado).

And????
Created has multiple context. It doesn’t mean that the USDA thought of the food pyramid all on its own. I am fully aware the Sweds published it first. Created, in this instance, meant the USDA came up with a version based on the American diet and introduced it to the public

Why does the food pyramid incite such anger in you?
I just remembered it being discussed in school prior to 1992.

It’s amazing how conditioned people are now to not know what overweight is and consider it healthy. All during 2020 all you heard was about healthy people dying from Covid then you saw a picture and they were pretty fat.

Portion size has gone way up as well. When I was in high school health class in 2000 our teacher had a portion size chart in the classroom and I remember that a hamburger patty should fit into the palm of your hand. Today portions are huge and on top of that restaurants put all kinds of crazy sauces and toppings on that add calories galore, and that is just one type of food.
When I was a kid I felt food was pretty basic, not very exotic. Now foods have all kinds of crazy stuff added on that make it extremely unhealthy.

Anger? It’s 7 am, no one should be angry this early. Lol. I’m still on my first cup of coffee. I just felt the need to explain the context I used the word “created” since you felt the need to inject yourself with an “actually” post.
My problem with the USDA food pyramid is it was the government injecting itself into the lives of American families with pseudo science that proved to be wrong.
ETA: I also agree that fast food and portion size also plays a part too. It’s not all the government’s fault. Families need to take responsibility for their eating habits as well

I think we all know how we got here and the reasons why. The question is how do we get out. Limits on amounts of soda provided at fast food restaurants was one of the first tries, but people said the government cant tell me what to do, so apparently that wont work. I do think restricting the food companies on what can be used in making the food would help. And portion sizes should be restricted, but i wont hold my breath that anyone will agree to this

I think a huge part of it is the cost of living increasing requiring dual working spouses
A lot easier to cook at home with fresh unprocessed ingredients when you are home all day
Society as a whole was better off when a family unit had only one working spouse.

Let's not forget that fat is beautiful these days. You can get yelled at if you say otherwise.
I get yelled at a lot.

People want to blame food ingredients and play the victim but it is a huge increase in sedentary lifestyles that has lead to this. You don't have to leave your bed to socialize any longer. You can work from home. When you spend all of that time inside you snack more. Limited activity, greater ingestion of calories, boom, obese.
