I guess the point I'm making is that the tech industry is not relegated to Silicon Valley. It's also the main industry of SF as well.

I am sure there are some right out of college giving it a try but lets just say living that counter culture lifestyle 50 miles from work doesn't lend itself to 60-80 hour work weeks in the Tech Industry

the thing is the tech industry has priced out artists in SF (the most expensive city in the US now)
so Oakland is the "new SF", and Oakland is facing the same housing issues b/c of the tech industry
it's cultural gentrification of artists in a city that prides itself on artists. Austin is having similar issues

So because someone chooses only to be an artist and not fund their hobby through regular employment, everyone should feel guilty? I guess the implication is that the government should pay artists so they can follow their passion and drink Starbucks all day while smoking subsidized weed?

i think it's more that the government isn't doing anything to combat gentrification
and
they don't want to live in areas of section 8, where the government does combat gentrification

Then they should do something bold and creative like moving to Stockton and turning it into a cultural utopia.
I mean, these people love living in dog shite conditions, I think we can find some suitable locations.

You would think some of those social justice warrior socialists up in Palo Alto would pool a few million $$$ and provide some affordable housing for their loser artist friends so they are not killed in warehouse fires. But alas I suspect they want HUD (all of us) to pay for it.

They are cool with the Silicon Valley people because they wear hoodies and colorful socks instead of suits. Spend 10 minutes around these west coast hippies, and you quickly realize that what they really care about most is image, not some utopian dreams of saving the world. The Silicon Valley people, despite their greed, appear to care about things and thus, the dirty freeloaders think they are some new age type of corporate leaders.
