It's the millennial hipster Mecca. Once you understand that there are a group of young, tech-savvy people who, for whatever reason, don't mind blowing their meager salary on stupid shite like $20/oz artisinal sea salt, then you'll understand the allure. These people don't live in the same reality you and I live in. They'll literally rent a bedroom in a complete stranger's house for $3k/month just to say they live in the city.

My mother was an artist,and made a living at it because she was also well schooled in marketing and business.

Even at far more sane levels, you see this mindset of entitlement to live in urban areas exhibited by hippies and hipsters and millennials (I know they're different).
For example, go look at Curbd for any booming (but not NYC, Chicago, etc.) city and it's filled with 25 year olds who are enraged by the idea of chain stores and whining about why landowners are using their land to make huge profits instead of building more affordable housing for art students.
It's amazing.

A few years ago, I went to a Mardi Gras party that was a little art warehouse, not unlike the one in Oakland, that was somewhere in uptownish Nola. I was spun and it was dark I couldn't tell you where it was. Free booze,art everywhere liberal use of controlled substances and shitty dj.
If that place still exist it is only a matter of time before it burns down. Those Wookies were running all kinds of electronics out of that shack

This is legit one of my biggest fears. Such a helpless awful way to go. That video is among the worst shite I have watch on the internet.
Same with that shooting in Orlando. It's amazing how easy that could have happened at a bogies, obviously with different motivation but it would really easy replicate the causalities.

OK we are drifting off of topic here. Tech Industry in SF is not necessarily Silicon Valley. Living in Oakland and working in SF is routine, that is what the BART is for. Living in Berkley and Oakland and commuting to Palo Alto and Mountain View is a bit more challenging but with Southern routes of the BART and I-880 definitely manageable
These people living and partying at the Ghost Ship are not typical Silicon Valley career types. These are hippies, artists and counter culture types living in a flophouse built by hand from an empty warehouse in an industrial area. Saying these people are living in a warehouse because of high housing rent in Oakland is misleading. This is a lifestyle choice, not merely an economic and affordable housing thing.
