$600M pledged already by 3 of France’s wealthiest families. Had that same money been spread throughout society in the name of income equality, how many decades would it have taken to raise that sum from the general public?

In my own community, I have seen millionaires time and time again - often anonymously -make the impossible suddenly possible for damn worthy causes.

If it’s between a free market capitalist society and an income-equality socialist society with income caps, I’m for a system that allows billionaires and millionaires all the way!

Interesting way to think about it, and I agree with you. I’m not rich, maybe never will be, but I like having rich people.

I think its great that people still understand how meaningful a building of that magnitude means to our civilization.

All hope is not lost yet.

But just think of how that $600 million could be spent by the government. $150 million could be spent on the restoration!! That's progress!!

They had a caller on WWL this morning talking about how that money should be used to help the homeless instead of rebuilding “some old building”.

Was the building insured, or because it's part of the Catholic system, do they not insure?

That caller is probably on food stamps...

Rich people paying for things is pretty damn important to society, no lie.

... and you feed all the poor for... what?... a week.

Good Book even addressed it, “you will always have the poor”.

Not saying not to be charitable. We are expected to be. But inspiring faith and hope and inspiration is a completely different argument.

Under a 1905 law, Notre-Dame de Paris is one of 70 churches in Paris built before that year which are owned by the French state. While the building itself is owned by the state, the Catholic Church is the designated beneficiary, having the exclusive right to use it for religious purposes in perpetuity. The archdiocese is responsible for paying the employees, for security, heating and cleaning, and for ensuring that the cathedral is open free to visitors. The archdiocese does not receive subsidies from the French state.

I got one downvote but still don't know if the building was insured. Artwork typically is insured, as are buildings.

Not sure about outside the US. But most parishes in the US have rainy- day money for the air conditioning not working, not for the 800 year-old, we-don’t-even-know-how-they-did-it sort of thing

ETA: wasn’t me that down-voted you

Thanks. So government owned building. Do you think they insured it?

You of course know them all and can attest to this personally.
