as an attorney one should know that regardless of what the Home Depot Manager said, he should report this to police and the home corporate office of Home Depot.

I smell something fishy in this story

You can literally walk out of Home Depot with thousands of dollars of tools, meanwhile I can't even buy a case of toilet paper at Costco without someone checking my receipt at the door like I'm a god damn criminal.
I actually witnessed somebody try this at a costco recently.

woman had a cart full - alcohol, steaks... shicken..... etc. and was at the exit and was tried to dodge the receipt checkers and costco had a little tribe in action pretty quick... asking the lady what register she checked out at "they can re do your receipt, which one was it" the "shopper" then started getting beligerant using the cue words you would expect and raising her voice - costco employees took cart manager asked her to go to the register with her - "shopper" bolted out of store... as did another lady about 5 spots in line behind her..... just left her cart too..

I was a retail store manager when I was in college, so I can chime in on this.

It’s all about Liability.

Guys steals something.

Store worker runs after them, gets into a confrontation, slips and falls, etc etc and gets hurt....

The store is now liable for his/her injury. (For not providing a safe working environment)

Guy that stole something, gets into a confrontation, slips and falls (while running away) and gets hurt, on the store property.....

The store is now liable for his/her injury.

1000’s of dollars in lawsuits, attorneys fees, etc etc

All over a $20 power drill.

I get Home Depot’s liability stand point, but I eagerly a wait the day where we as a society of people go back to demanding a deep respect for the rule of law and disdain for thieves.

Elections matter. Make sure you vote in EBR or their agenda will continue to get pushed. You know who and what I am talking about.

this is not what we are talking about. There is a photo of the guys license plate and management didn't want it nor did they call police.

I had a friend who was an assistant at the HD in Lafayette. We had worked together an another do it yourself type store when I was in college. They definitely do not want their employees (other than security personnel in some areas) trying to apprehend shoplifters. The risk to the average employee is too great and exposes the company to liability. They do (or at least did then) at least prosecute when possible.

Every retail outlet accounts for some shrinkage. In the vast majority of the stores, that was mostly the result of employee related theft back when I was in retail.

Thousands of dollars in legal fees and settlements, bad press, if they wrongly accuse a person of color.
Home Depot, if they lose 100 bucks per store per day is looking at 85 million a year in product. Let’s assume it is worth 55 million.

That is a lot of cabbage

For the lovers out there: Victoria's Secret has the same "no chase/no prosecute" policy & with Valentine's Day coming up.....................Saw a POS walk behind the liquor counter at Albertson's a few weeks ago, grab a $100+ bottle of Hennessey's , brush past the clerk & walk out the door. Store mgr gave the same "no chase/no prosecute" policy, saying their focus is to try & get the product back. Wal Mart, from most accounts, does catch & prosecute.

I would hire an employee to watch the doors and anything that looked suspicious approaching the door have a remote controlled instant lock feature on the door.

The way regular folks can help deter shoplifting is to not buy stuff from eBay or Craigslist.
Got to know a $200 NIB DeWalt miter saw being peddled for $75 on eBay has to be stolen goods.
Quit supporting the thieves.

It will not be long before they get wise and go to a Costco type exit. I traveled to south and central America a few times, most box stores now do it there. Also actual security guards at every exit/entries.

My BIL worked at Lowes for a while and told me they were told not to pursue thieves outside the store, and to just let them go.

They said it wasn't worth the potential liabilities.

as has been said many many times already in this thread, it's not about chasing them down. It's them not wanting to call the police or have them prosecuted with photo evidence.

It will when people realize HD won’t prosecute at all and just start taking what they need without paying.
