You mean like Endymion flexing its political muscle to return to Marconi/Orleans to Carrollton to Canal St. route?
Now, don't misunderstand me, I am very much a carnival and New Orleans "traditionalist" in many ways (though not all.) I can remember driving from watching the Grela parade to catch Endymion on North Broad. I understand Endymion's roots.
I also loved the days of neighborhood parades and trying to catch them all. Carrollton, Freret, Mid-City, Pontchartrain. Something is lost, to me, when Carrollton and Mid-City start on Napoleon Ave. and proceed downtown on St. Charles Ave.
I say all that because I don't necessarily begrudge Endymion wanting to parade on its old route and not taking the "Uptown route" like EVERYBODY else. And yes, it's WAY easier for NOPD and Sanitation for there to be only one route.
However, Endymion used a lot of political and P.R. clout to get restored to their old route despite the city's desire to have every parade on the same basic route.

For someone who wasn't here for that, what years was Endymion on the uptown route and how did it affect the parade? I've heard about when it had to go back to back with Bacchus but what about in "normal" years.

I will tell you this about our band. Unless there is a protracted stop, like a breakdown, or some other unforeseen circumstance, the percussion line plays continuously from beginning to end. They simply don't stop.
Our band has ten marching cadences, that they play anytime the entire band moves...whether it's coming into a stadium to set up in the "stadium block" or taking the field for a halftime or festival show.
During a parade, they play all ten repeated. After they complete two cadences, the band plays a piece...two cadences...piece of music. The playlist of pieces/songs is about ten to a dozen.
If you didn't hear our kids, you at least heard a percussion cadence that was complex and not that roll-step that the elementary schools play.

When I say they werent playing, I meant they werent playing songs.....yes, they were all always playing a cadence...then when they got passed us they would start jamming....it was probably just a coincidence, but it seem seem like almost every band started playing as soon as they got pass us

Really it was only in 2006, after Katrina, when NOPD and the rest of the city were at a personnel lowpoint. You still had tons of people in "recovery" rebuilding homes, and all the resultant debris and trash lingering all over the city for months on end. Sanitation services weren't totally up and running, either.
That year, Endymion rolled uptown as there was no way for the city to accommodate them. But they began a p.r. campaign almost immediately, and lots of businesses in Mid-City joined in. There was also a groundswell at the grass roots level to "bring Endymion home to Mid-City."
I'm fuzzy on all the details, now, but I remember it happening.

Mid City was still a disaster....there was no way to have a parade roll through there
When they moved the parades to Uptown in 2006, there were hardly any bands if any at all, due mostly to the fact there were no schools opened. I remember it wasn't very crowded and actually kind of enjoyable because it was mostly just locals...not many people came in from out of town that year.

I'd love to see Mid City return to their original route...
does anyone remember the parade that started in the lower 9th and marched up St. Claude?

You're thinking, unless I'm wrong, of either Okeanos or Pegasus. Pegasus is gone, but Okeanos survives, and they parade on Sunday, before Mid-City and Thoth, but on the Uptown route.

Didn't Endymion also have a year or two on the uptown route due to the Carolton street car project.

Don't remember the year, but we also had to roll on the uptown route when the street car tracks were being placed on Canal..
Edit.. I see Sippy's post... Yes.. and it was in 2007, the theme that year was Endangered And Extinct Species... I was on the Black Rhino float and the horn of the figure head on the rhino hit a light pole on the corner of St Charles and Napoleon..
And by the way, St Charles is way too small for Endymion...

I went to the first weekend of Mardi Gras for the first time this past weekend and it was a lot of fun, possibly for this weekend. Pretty chill but still enough going on to stay busy.

I can't wait. I live on the route now. I have off of work and friends coming to town. Some who this is their first time stepping foot in Louisiana and others who I graduated from LSU with. It'll be a shite show and a lot of fun.
