Not if it's not illegal under state law:

quote:

Employment-at-will means that both the employer and the employee can end the employment relationship at any time without notice or reason. ... So if the reason for your termination is not illegal under the laws of your state, then yes, your employer can fire you for what you do on your own time, outside of work.

North Carolina is an at-willemployment state, which means that employers have significant discretion to fire employees. Unless your termination violates a specific law or goes against the terms of your contract, your employer can fire you for any reason at all – including reasons that seem ridiculous or unfair.Oct 20, 2014

Why does it bother people so much when they are asked to show their ID? It’s a very minimal inconvenience and usually when you refuse it only leads to a bigger inconvenience.

Maybe this is why?

Holy hyperbole. So you get mad when you have to show your ID at the bank, vote, buying booze, going to a bar? I’m not defending this guy I am speaking generally.

You see the difference between a stranger with no authority at the neighborhood pool and going to the bank, store to buy beer, vote; right?

Wasn’t he the head of the HOA? This is the swimming pool in the neighborhood. He’s not some random guy walking up to random people on the street. I wouldn’t have a problem showing him my ID.

The story I read said he was head of the HOA's pool committee, not head of the HOA. But even if he was head of the HOA that wouldn't give him the authority to challenge people who already have the required access cards.

And yes my pic was a bit hyperbolic, but this IS America, we're supposed to be a free country where we don't have to show our "papers" to random assholes on a power trip whether they're wearing a swim suit or a badge.

ETA: he also wasn't asking "random" people for their IDs, only the black ones.

The only requirement per the signage is that you have your key card. Which she did. This guy is an a-hole and that’s the bottom line. She wasn’t required to show her ID, so why should she? The police seem to agree with her on that point. Just because he doesn’t believe them doesn’t mean she needs further proof.

Just because you are willing to show your ID doesn’t mean others are required.

According to the story he was approached by other residents about her status.

He went up to her asked if she could confirm if she was was a resident.

Woman screeches racism.

Even if he was power tripping, this doesn’t make him a racist.

And asking someone for ID in your neighborhood shouldn’t ever cost you your job no matter the faux pas.

That’s the gist I got.
