Louisiana is a shithole

Do they really need another reason?

Houston proper is worse or at least equally bad as BR or Nola.

If my options were Houston proper or BR/Nola I’m going BR/Nola all day

I live in a nice place…uncrowded and uncomplicated. Granted I don’t have to go far to enter shitholia but most everything I need is within and I can travel to see natural beauty and attend to my need for better shite to do. It’s all a balance.

my top priority is not being financially stressed and I can manage that here

I left ten years ago, and it had frick all to do with property insurance, so I didn't answer.

That said, I left Metro New Orleans because of:

1) Surly, incompetent public servants

2) The inability to so much as keep the lights on during the world's single most watched TV event

3) The lack of a middle class. Itinerant sculptors, Uptown seersucker wackjobs, the guy who mops up the bathroom on an oil rig... these are all interesting people in small doses, but dosage is indeed key.

4) Every single damned thing about Orleans Parish. Amputate it and I'll consider returning.

I stayed.
I need to be near great restaurants, the Superdome and Tiger Stadium. And Mardi Gras.

Got sick of the high taxes, high insurance rates, and hurricanes. Next question

Better money
Better politicians
Better governmental structure
Less murdery

Does Scruffy need to go on?

Guarantee you they highlight the “anti-gay” Louisiana bill more than they focus on the terrible crime

City Park in New Orleans is one of the most beautiful parks in the country, and the biggest in a city. Insurance is surely a problem and needs to be fixed by a national disaster policy. Jobs are fine as long as you have skills. Lastly, its a hell of a lot better property tax wise than Texas. Once your kids are out of private/parochial schools the tuition is all yours. In Texas you pay outlandish taxes for the "good public schools" even after your kids are out or have no kids. The private/parochial schools in New Orleans are as good as anywhere if not better. Who the hell puts their own children in government schools anyway? There's no such thing as good government schools.

I moved to Texas (Austin area) from Nola for obvious reasons (quieter, cleaner, opportunities, elevation, no hurricanes, etc). It is a lot nicer here but I miss Louisiana a lot. Everything in Texas is too damn spread out and no one in Austin is from here so there's little shared common ground. I'm seriously thinking of moving back but a week back in LA will likely remind me of why I left.

I think a lot of people who post on here would be shocked how fun and active New Orleans is every weekend. Tons of people out and about and lots to do There is no doubt that this city is one of the best in the country

cost of living is still comparatively low.

While true, there are places where you get a much better bang for your buck. Especially in the south.

I've lived in 4 states and can honestly say Louisiana is far and way the worst.

The roads are terrible.
There is litter everywhere. When you travel to other places you see just how trashy and unkept the state is
The weather is awful. (Can't really change that)
Drivers are amongst the worst in the country. Probably has something to do with being 50th in education

IMO the cost of living here (with rising insurance rates) does not match the quality of life.

Can move to the MS gulf coast, Birmingham suburbs, or Central-NW Arkansas for relatively the same COL

I’m here to take care of my father when the time comes. After that I’m selling everything and headed to parts unknown. I’ve been here almost 25 years and it’s time. I’ll probably work remotely from Costa Rica and just slowly fade away in a haze of brown skin and black hair.

I responded to them honestly.

Where I'm from, 3 degrees from Louisiana institutions. Low paying Jobs, high taxes without a return, crime.
