Will a one way trip take 4+ hours?
According to the article, close to 5 hours from departure to arrival.

Lots of doubt in this thread but will predict the NO to Miss legs with do very well and at peak times (likely football weekends, MG, Jazzfest, and summer weekends the train will be packed and possibly will need more cars.

It is definitely not a 90 minute drive unless you are one of those doods in a Challenger doing 125mph on the twin span.

It's more like 2-2.5 depending on traffic and what side of the bay you are going to and what part of NOLA metro area you are going to.

This was once a 3 hour train ride which isn't bad compared to a 2-2.5 hour car drive.

To be expected from Amtrak. That is ridiculous.

I'm not going to read the article to fact check you, but this seems absurd. What's the point?

So the last rail passengers to travel east from Mobile were on the train that hit the water after a barge knocked the bridge out of whack. That was thirty some years ago.
Talk about damaged infrastructure not being repaired in a timely manner.

I’m not sure where the stops in MS are, but that’s the only thing I could see making some sense for commuters perhaps living in MS and working in NOLA or Mobile. No way I’m taking a 5 hour train from NOLA to Mobile.

quote:

Amtrak has indicated plans for trains to leave Mobile at 6:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., with eastbound trains arriving at 11:18 a.m. and 9:14 p.m.
I actually read this wrong initially and then figured the trains would leave their destinations at approximately the same times in each direction.

This is pure craziness - there isn’t enough people wanting to ride a train between NOLA and Mobile to make this even remotely feasible…especially since all passenger rail travel is subsidized anyway.

You still have to get to the departure terminal and to your destination. Absolutely no one will use this when they realize a 2.5 hour drive for $25 in gas is now $50 and takes 6 hours door to door

but it sounds like these morons want to terminate in Mobile for some dumbass reason

This could be awesome if it expands into other large southern cities, but I don’t know many people who are begging for a train to mobile.

Hopefully expansion is in the future.

And the price just goes up for a family. It makes no sense for the public. But totally makes sense for mobile city council as the federal govt is going turn around and give them $75million! Tax payers taking it up the arse on this one.

This is a good start but it must eventually expand to Florida.

You still have to get to the departure terminal and to your destination.

That's the way all public transport works, and most private transport. If you live in Saraland or West Mobile, and travel to Belle Chase or MSY, you have to drive to I-10 for half hour, then 2 hours down I-10, then 25 minutes in NOLA to get to your destination.

Unless you live at Government & Water and you're travelling to NO East, you have assocaited travel by car on top of your interstate journey.

I don't know where you get the six hours door to door. THe quoted times are about 3 hours. When I have multi-day trade shows in NOLA that involve some drinking, I'll definitely take the train. It's $40+/day just to park the car. I also would prefer to ride and get some work done over three hours rather than be my own driver for 2.5 hours.

I could see the convenience of doing a late night train but the costs aren’t going to be cheap so it’s just not going to get much traffic. Another waste of taxpayer dollars.

Maybe, but it was an Amtrak route until Katrina happened.

I don’t know if it made money, but they have data that can give them idea of whether it will be profitable, break even or a money pit.
