The lump sum after taxes is about $500 million right now. That 1 in 302,500,000 chance is worth $2 to me. I'm in.

That'll help pay down my student loans.

Aren't there around 300 million possible combinations of numbers? So technically, you could buy every possible combination and come out ahead.

The problem is that if another ticket hits with you, you'd be a few hundred million in the hole.

Probably more like 4, but 1 wouldn't surprise me.

Ignoring the chance for multiple winners, which would eviscerate this calculation, but including federal taxes, the expected value of a ticket is now positive. A $2 ticket is worth about $2.16.

ETA - Eh, maybe closer to $2.11.

Thanks real problem is buying 302 million tickets and making sure you buy every number.

It would take years for the machine to print out the tickets.

You'd probably also increase the jackpot through your ticket purchases.
