That's a complete crock. Your neighbors house being painted pink will not lower your property value
If I'm trying to negotiate on a house next door to the pink house, I'm sure as shite using that a reason as to not pay comp prices. I would never buy a house with a neighbor like that though, if he's painted his house pink to prove a point about HOA's, what the frick else is he going to do
I don't know how you can argue that wouldn't lower property value for a neighboring house

telling me that your neighborhood has a HOA would lower it's value in my mind moreso than having pink house as a neighbor
We're not talking about what YOU would pay, we're talking about the home's value.

I'm pretty sure Salmon's dog was raped by an HOA board member or something

HOA started threatening fines after my neighbor put a portable (unattached). Basketball goal on his driveway for his 7 year old son’s Xmas gift.
I've lived in 3 different houses with 3 different HOAs. Haven't heard a peep from any of them, but I also made sure to do my research as well as have realtors who can school me on which HOAs to look out for, and I've gotten great advice from each of them.

That's a complete crock. Your neighbors house being painted pink will not lower your property value. Do you have tangible evidence that a controversial change in paint schemes to a neighboring house lowers the value of the of the other homes within a neighborhood, or are you just deriving that because you feel like it would and you dont like looking at it.

And yea, you can bet that neighbor is going to be a huge PITA with a whole lot of other shite in addition to the pink house.
All this dudes saying they wouldn't care if their neighbor had a pink house, it's just BS, easy to say on a message board. None of those dudes would be buying a house next to that house, and they'd 100% be offering wayyyyyy below market value because of the pink house next door, unless they're just not very smart.

That’s the thing. The pink house is just the symptom in this case. This dude has the crazy.

Can you imagine coming up on a house next door to this pink house and telling your realtor you want to offer full market value or more? The realtor would look at those posters like they were complete idiots.

Unless we are talking very poor areas, which this home does not appear to be in, I would bet every licensed home appraiser in the United States of America disagrees with you, and since the lending institutions that people generally use to purchase homes rely on this data, you are almost assuredly talking out of your arse.

What Affects the Appraisal Value of a House?
quote:
The precise neighborhood you live in makes a difference. An appraiser will take into account what the homes to either side of yours look like. He will check the quality of your neighborhood schools, if there is a homeowner's association and how well they help maintain the quality of the neighborhood. A comparable home in a nearby, but better kept, neighborhood could appraise at a higher value than a home located in a neighborhood on the decline.
Complete crock?

Exactly, I think anyone saying that it wouldn’t hurt neighboring property values has either never bought a house or is as crazy as the pink house guy. A house next door to that guy would have to be drastically cheaper for me to even consider purchasing it. I’d be pissed if my realtor even tried to show me a house next door to that

The guy was talking out of his arse. I'm surprised anyone would try and argue such a dumb point.

Like I said, I doubt he’s ever purchased a house. If he has then I can’t imagine what that process was like for him

So he wants a HOA. First time I've heard of that.

Checking in. Would prefer this guy who stays on his property and minds his own business 10-1 over some retired a-hole poking around my yard measuring how far my trash cans are from the curb.
"Just a reminder. Your trash can was on the curb at 7:02 PM. All trash cans must be moved behind your fence out of sight no later than 6:00 pm the day of trash removal. The next occurrence will result in a $25.00 fine."
Who has time for this?
Where the frick do you people live that have hoa like this? I’ve had one for 20 years and I don’t have problems and actually they do some good work. And if you do live where you have problems go join the board and change that. It’s retired people because no one else wants to do it.

I knew a guy whose sister painted her house pink in the mid-1999’s. The house was on Broadway in uptown New Orleans. The official name they gave it was The Cutest Little Pink House On Broadway and they had personalized stationery and envelopes with the name and pic of the house. It definitely stood out but it wasn’t obnoxious and the neighbors didn’t seem to care.
