Anyone else hesitant to take a step in life (buy a home or have kids) with how unstable careers seem to have become? Four friends have been laid off in the past two week, with one having bought a house weeks before getting let go. I know this stuff goes in cycles but the uncertainty combined with inflation makes the risk seem too risky.

There will never be a time where everything feels right.
Are you currently financially stable?

That's pretty sobering but life is full of risks.

Yes but I'm in tech and its getting hammered. Thinking about switching careers (maybe accounting) if I get let go.

There’s never a right time. Take the leap now.

It would be scary for a young person with so many jobs going away all the time and replaced either by overseas personnel or simply technology changes.

Yes and no....getting in, not so much. Once in, 'I done lost my mind - what was I thinking'

We've always tried to play it safe and have weathered rounds of layoffs, been laid off, and determined there is never a time of true stability.

I think modern society keeps us on edge and previous generations had the instability but just didn't give a shite on a daily basis.

We probably should have had kids earlier. You realize it all works out in the end and you just have to take calculated leaps of faith.

Own a business. Stability is non-existent on the daily. You become numb to adversity after awhile.

The only thing that always feels right is leaving it in. Just roll the dice and see what happens.

I’d rather be young than old in this situation. I’d be terrified if I wasn’t able to pivot or be flexible.

Yup been feeling that uncertainty for quite a while now. Just gotta put more thought into any financial decisions at this point. When uncertainty is too great, then limit spending on the purchases you can by applying the rule, “If can’t afford to buy it twice, then it’ll have to wait.” Time is a great asset for helping to make the better decision in the moment, albeit hindsight is 20/20. Life is like a game of chess, better make your next move your best move.

For what it costs for kids now, that’s not a very smart choice

The instability of working for a corporate healthcare org is why I have always stayed on part time or PRN at the hospital.

I love my current full time “out of the hospital” job- but will always keep my part time hospital based job for the certainty that if this unicorn job I have now dries up - I can always go back to the ER or ICU and not have my lifestyle adversely affected.

I'm in the opposite boat, where I've seen the economic insanity and didn't want to risk jumping in, and feel like I missed out on the grift. There's a cost being too cautious/rational, too.

No advice, but yes.

I'm scared shitless to make a move because there's a window after busy season where layoffs hit.

It just seems like any sort of attempt at permanence is knocked over with ease.

Sure, but that begs the question, which is: Are things so unstable at this time that he should be conservative?

Answer: Certainly you should be more careful if you think there is a substantial chance you will lose your job during a period in which it is difficult to find a new job.

Experience has shown us that a surging economy is rarely more than five years away. Use this time to save and invest. When the next downturn (we might be entering it now) is over, and you are gainfully employed, that's the time to take a little risk. And you'll have the savings from this period to help you.

Anyone who is willing to relocate and doesnt get scared off by this one thing can go find gainful employment.

What makes people nervous is the fact you are looking for employment in the same area where the layoffs are. I hate to say this, but Louisiana is a terrible state for economy and a suck down on all citizens. As soon as the citizens can see the other side (Texas or other states) they wouldnt move back.

This Louisiana family loyalty thing is killing families.

Will tell people this same story and then watch from the sidelines as most dont have the heart.
