Anyone else hesitant to take a step in life (buy a home or have kids) with how unstable careers seem to have become?

Don’t buy a house if you don’t have an emergency fund to cover 3-6months of expenses

Yes but I'm in tech and its getting hammered. Thinking about switching careers (maybe accounting) if I get let go.

I switched careers twice. It was the scariest thing professionally I have ever done. The first one was a huge mistake and the second was the best decision I ever made.

The thing is, I would not have had a chance to make that second move if I hadn't made the first.

No advice, but yes. I'm scared shitless to make a move because there's a window after busy season where layoffs hit. It just seems like any sort of attempt at permanence is knocked over with ease.

Same. Me and wife have stable jobs and make good money but seems every month is some kind of Game of Life bullshite with shite breaking, looming possible new expenses, etc., and the costs being much higher than in the past.

but Louisiana is a terrible state for economy and a suck down on all citizens. As soon as the citizens can see the other side (Texas or other states) they wouldnt move back.

I'm based in Dallas.

My scare of layoffs is industry specific. Would be scared of layoffs after busy season if I was in NYC.

I will give you that part of my fear is that I work remotely from Louisiana and would have to relocate if I was terminated.

This is a legitimate fear for anyone. Remote work in Louisiana to potentially having to be in the office in a major city is a big change.

They way I looked at it was if they are willing to pay to relocate me, Im gone.

You can always go back you will not always have the chance to leave.

Been through it when I almost got fired. Sold everything and downsized. Went back to school. So decreased my liabilities and increased my assets. Then you wait until preparation meets opportunity.

If you are already on the plane with a shoot, you go ahead and jump. You don't bitch out. If you have a job and it seems secure, don't let the potential of the economy dictate your story. Roll forward...just make conservative decisions on home size. Kids don't know poor from middle class from rich until they get older...they just have love for their family. Never let the economy dictate the decision to have a kid. Kids are amazing....most the time.

Except the last month of pregnancy and first 3 months of their life. Those 4 months suck.

I like to remind myself that when things hairy that my grandparents survived the depression so I should be able to handle whatever we're experiencing now.

It helps a little bit. They worked their asses off though. Sunup to sundown and to it all over tomorrow. Didn't know any different so I don't think they really minded.

Have faith in God and keep walking the path He set you on. If you don’t believe in God, then good luck.

Dont buy your ideal house. Buy the one that makes the most financial sense. Maybe one that needs a little work. If someone happens...its much easier to offload a cheaper house than an expensive ideal one

Accounting always needs sharp IT focused employees.

I'm glad I got through that phase of life. I do sympathize. Nothing like anxiety hanging off your back while you try to live your life.
