1. One of the hardest things IMHO for high school kids to understand is these rankings do a generally poor job representing post-graduate outcomes. Yes, an engineering degree from MIT gives you a leg up vs an engineering degree from LSU (or just about anywhere else for that matter), but there’s practically zero difference in having a degree in a field like engineering or business from Washington University in St Louis (#8) vs any public SEC school. In actuality, no employer is going to look at resumes from two equally qualified entry level applicants and pick one solely because he went to UC Davis (#37) instead of University of Cincinnati (#151).

2. The #1 thing the elite private universities could do for this country is to expand enrollment. All of those schools have the endowments and (with the possible exception of MIT & Columbia) the land/facilities to double in size. Rice is doing the right thing, aiming to increase undergrad enrollment by 20% over 4 years. All the fancy schools should follow suit.

3. This somewhat pains me to say it, but, if you are a Texas high school student, it is really hard to pass on UT. Yes, you’ll need to finish in the top 6% of your class (and even that only guarantees admission to certain undergrad colleges), but UT is affordable ($12K in-state), generally highly-ranked (#38), and really highly-ranked in fields like engineering, computer science, and business (all top 10). UT is well-represented in a lot of industries, especially Tech. In my experience, UT is better-represented a in Tech than just about any other big public school. University of Illinois and Purdue are sneaky-good public schools for similar reasons.

No. But typical comment. Didn't take long either. Exactly what do you think the population of black students at these universities are? Start with LSU.

The New York Times had a freak out article because this ranking dropped Columbia from #2 to #18 because they were lying about their diversity metrics

Rice (15 currently) would be 9/10ish if they had purchased Baylor College of Medicine a few years ago when they wanted a deal. Problem was BCM has too much debt and the Board nixed it. Grad programs are a major factor in these rankings.

Yes, the rankings can be manipulated but USNEWS is by far the most prominent.

Niche is a more recent one that takes other considerations. Same sort of schools but Rice is 6th. Biggest delta between the other peer schools in USNEWS.

The rankings are not that big of a deal and does not speak much to the quality of the programs. Acceptance rates, retention rates, years to graduation, etc. all factor in.
Size of endowment as well. None of this speaks to the quality of the education. If a school can pick from the top 5% of its applicants shouldn't they be expected to produce an extremely high graduation rate?

$62,000 a year for undergrad is just such a poor financial choice.

And probably a lot other laughable categories, like "social justice awareness" or "strength of diversity"

They do the same thing for states too which is why Texas is in the bottom half. Categories like equity et. al.

Aren't these things partly based on the amount of minorities, specifically blacks, at universities?

Wouldn't that help southern universities?

I like Tate….but LSU needs to move up 50-60 places. He needs to make that happen over the next 5 years too.

Columbia University dropped from 2 to 18 this year because of falsifying data. I'm sure no one else is falsifying data for what is essentially this paid for ranking.
