People in places like Cuba or Venezuela or most of Africa or wherever just simply can't really conceive of what life is like for the developed world, and many have no real point of reference (other than very remote and intangible things like movies or television shows) for the delta between the material well-being of themselves and the material well-being of an upper middle class family in the U.S. That's not the case at all for people who are struggling either economically or mentally or both in the U.S.

I have a crackpot theory on why the Middle East started getting exceptionally violent in the past century: they saw some photographs of the outside world and realized they were living in shite. Before then, they could denounce them as myths, but seeing photos from the World Fair I think had to have dramatically affected them.

Funny, because as I watched AHC’s shows on Stalin and Hitler, it occurred to me that those who oppose capitalism are the very same who are responsible for the real loss of life in this world, and loss of hope as well.

No thanks. Not buying what you’re pushing.

I concede that point. Well stated.

And what you wrote is true. Not referring to midwest vs the West. There is a scary correlation to altitude and suicides.

So, I acknowledge your point.

And....don't tell me China and Korea don't hide their suicide rates. I know they do.

Grit Post...

What kind of socialist rag is that...?

There's a story about Permit Patty in there... If they're against capitalism, they should be proud of her...

Which media outlet partnered with UC Berkeley to complete the study?

Good point.

I knew two guys in college who grew up in East Berlin. They knew all the commie propaganda was bull because there were too many places where you could see over the wall.

Not disagreeing with your whole post, but China has a truly capitalist economy now??

It's not truly capitalist, but they're clearly not communists anymore. They're taught that the system they're living under is "New Communism" despite the fact that people can own property now. It's a hybrid, and the Chinese clearly know that American ideals and infrastructure changed it. They're big fans of American culture over there.

I gotcha, I didn’t think they were completely Communist still, I just didn’t know if you were drawing complete parallels with their economy and ours.

Am I the only person that understands that a free, capitalistic society is not a perfect society?

There will be poor people, there will be gun deaths, there will be suicides, there will be homeless people, etc....

No society will ever be perfect. Not sure why people don't understand this.

Social media is the real issue. Everyone sees snipits of people’s best times and wonder why they aren’t living life like _______.

They get depressed and yea.

Yeah, I think Social Media plays a role. And not just because people see other people who pretend to be living the "perfect life", but it is the cause of younger people.. Middle school, high school aged kids. If something happens to them at school, it doesn't leave them. Before social media, after the school day, everyone went home and whatever happened was over.. Until the next day then eventually it would die off.. But today it follows them. And some kids, the pressure just gets to be too much. It's sad really.

I think most people understand that, although certainly not hardcore left-wing ideologues, but they are too agenda driven to be bogged down with that subtle detail.

I think most people realize given the discrepancies in what people are capable of and all of the intricacies that go along with the human condition, capitalism provides the most opportunity and is probably the fairest system one can construct.

I guess I'll just never fully understand suicide. No matter how dark things are, I've never thought of ending my life. It's the easy way out and they leave their loved ones to pick up the pieces and hurt more than that person ever did.

Go look at suicides in socialist countries, since this article is slanted against capitalism.

When the troubling rise in American suicide rates is taken in context with the relentless redistribution of wealth from the bottom 90 percent to the top 1 percent that took place over the same period, the culprit behind the wave of suicides is abundantly clear.

The reason it has not worked is because it has never been tried with good old fashioned American style inguinity. Poor execution!
