Nola is walkable in the quarter and CBD, but it's a haul from Uptown to Quarter. I did it drunk many times in college during Mardi Gras. Don't advise.

The ones Brad Pitt supposedly funded when he filmed Curious Case of Benjamin Button off 90/Claiborne or near that area? Did he actually fund all of that or is it a tale?

November 22, 1984, When Mark Posey was shot and killed outside of Fat Harry’s.

Dutch Morial was the mayor, and things had been going south for NOLA since 1970 when Moon Landrieu was elected. Crime had been on the uptick, but that brazen murder let everyone know that it was unsafe in the city. It was the tipping point.

When Moon Landrieu got elected, city government began to change and the corporations started packing their bags.

This were built after Katrina and were suppose to be low cost green builds. All turned to shite and are probably worthless now.

The guy you are responding to is referencing government built projects from the 60’s to 70’s.

Bay St. Louis and Ocean Springs are really great

A bunch of people from Nola either moved there or built second homes after the covid fiasco due to La Toya. I know of at least 10 people in my circle who have done this.

In the early 70’s, that guy would never have made it out alive.

Makes no sense on so many levels.

Owners I knew lived on the first floor, tenants were upstairs. Rain flooded them out, and like good little post-grad helicopter parent generation kids, they didn't pay for flood insurance if they could even get it. They also claimed 95%+ occupancy at $300 a night, and when I pulled up one down the street from them, it was $95 a night. A lot of people told themselves a lot of lies about how they could cash in on having an Air BnB.

We just spent a weekend there. We had a great time. My husband had only been once, for a short time (one night). We spent a long weekend and he loved the European feel, the food, the warmth from wait staff & the walkability of the city. We didn't encounter any riff-raff. It never felt dangerous (even though I know it is). But it was a great experience. Street parking, for free, steps from our hotel on Conti, between Dauphine & Bourbon. I realize, as a resident, it needs a whole lot of work, but as visitors, it was an enjoyable getaway. :

Sure, and that’s nice. My MA co-workers had the very same sentiments; although they did remark about the gunshots/shooting literally 2 blocks away, but kind of in an exciting wild-west way.

But the problem is that New Orleans USED to be great for BOTH residents AND tourists.

A city needs both.

Probably Katrina

Come on. The place was a shithole long before Katrina. Probably the 80s with the oil bust and corporate exodus to Houston began.

Plus the white flight to the north shore really started in the 80s

If you lived there, it started late 50searly 60s as the City began to fall behind other major cities. But that was a slow creep until Katrina. It got steeper after that.

As a city to visit, it was fairly safe in terms of violent crime, though property crime like theft was there.

It was fun to go there, but I just don't want the risk anymore. That may be purely perception, or me being an old man now, that is pushing me to avoid the place. I do miss the trips to NOLA we used to take, though.
