Coon's definitive guide to not being a dick when it comes to street performers and having them chase you down the street:

•Ted Mosbey blinders: no tip
•Just not acknowledging: no tip
•Taking a look but "meh": no tip
•Taking a look and chuckling/having interest piqued: eh, maybe if good enough a little tip
•Interacting/talking it up/enjoying act/taking pic: at least a buck
•Taking a picture with performer/act is really good: maybe more than a buck

•They come up to me in ANY WAY to solicit: no tip

If you follow these rules, you'll never have to worry about being chased down the street by a street performer.

All of the above are skills. Juggling, singing, music, etc are skills. Not everyone can do them, it takes practice to get better, etc.

Painting yourself is not a skill. Yes there is "effort" involved in picking up a paintbrush and lightly dabbing it on your body, but it is not a skill.

1. You are missing the entire point. The man performed, the OP noticed, and took a picture of the performance.

2.

I'd bet alot of money you could not put on paint and makeup and a costume and stand still for hours everyday in downtown new orleans. I'd love to see you try that.

Here are the facts in the OP:

Performer puts on a costume and performs by standing still as a statue.

OP comes by, sees him, recognizes him as a performer, enjoys it, and takes a picture. Then leaves without tipping the guy.

Performer calls him out on being a cheapskate.

OP cries.

I was looking for the CWS thread in which Leon Landry told Bilj to GFY. I dug through people's posts that would have been in that thread.. Like gmorgan and Bilj. But the admins wiped out everyone's posts from late May to
June 2008. Then I figured you would have been in an elimination game baseball thread and saw that thread in your history in the middle of 2008.

Wha

You love to troll after LSU gets knocked out of postseason play.

Eta: I found a picture of some girl in a thread about Corkfather's cute little slut he wanted to add on fb. Did he ever get that Saudi prince to put a virus on your computer?

The Ot was freaking crazy in 2008 and earlier.

The problem is the public space. Like SFP said, they are doing this in a public space therefore they give the structured environment and structured pay system. If they want that, they should work in a circus. That's problem #1. If we had to pay for everything that we "enjoy" in a public space, that would be insane.

I'm just playing devil's advocate here, only because throw out everything else: It's about courtesy, simple as that. It isn't about the above step by step process. It isn't about contracts. It isn't about "enjoying it" It's about courtesy. Most likely you're a bit more well off than these folks, they are doing something to earn a little cash, a buck can't hurt. That's it.

BUT, if my friends and I were playing soccer in a public park and a couple of groups of people came by and watched for a bit, would it be right if we asked those people for money? Yes or No. Would it be morally justifiable that we expect to be paid for playing soccer for the public?

Not to mention the fact that this apparently wasn't just one of those random one-time events. As I read the OP, this was the 2nd time that he took a pic of the same guy and quickly walked off without tipping him. 2 pics on 2 different trips and still can't just toss the guy 1 dollar? Why does the OP bother taking pics of this street performer on 2 different trips?

quote:

The last two times I was down there, the same arse hole tells me something when I took a picture of him but didn't tip. The first time, he was just standing in a garbage can, holding a sign that reads, "White Trash". The last time I was down there, he had painted himself gold and was trying to be a statue (like the two silver painted guys). I snap a picture and start walking off. He breaks character to tell he I need to tip him since I took his picture.

I hate the panhandlers that get pusses when you don't give them money. There was a guy in a wheelchair in front of Sushi Brothers on St. Charles. I didn't have any cash, so I told him and then said good luck. He then told me that I was the one that needed luck. This situation is different than what's in the OP, but it's the same mentality.

And if you think street performers wanting tips is what "entitlement culture" is then your to stupid too talk two.

If the bad ones expect tips no matter how terrible a performance they give then it is a feeling of entitlement to the tip IMO.

Wow, when I went to bed this morning, this topic had only one reply.

Here he is last year, the image of him in gold was not good so I deleted it

I did tip this guy (on another trip), but he was 1000x better than the first guy

That just looks like an idiot in a trash can. I would probably take a picture to show how dumb this clown is.

Serious question. Do these guys have to get a permit from the city to perform for cash in public?

OP is an artist, too.

Breesus and crew should march down to the quarter and demand that White Trash pay OP a dollar for getting in his photo.
