This is the third time this completely ignorant irrelevant argument has been posted.

Went few weekends ago for the first time in a while and saw a a street performer I had never seen before.
Was a guy in just dirty underwear with a leather mask on and he was blowing up ballons. His few signs around him were bashing the NOPD. This guy been around a while?

I am provided with things of value multiple times a day. Doens't mean I should be handing out dollars left and right.

Frick that! If I'm on a road trip and have to pee, I'm peeing.

OP is a fricking cheapskate. Definitely should have tipped him. He got your attention. You thought he was interesting enough to stop and take a picture.

taking a picture isn't interacting.
You have to hold my attention for 47 seconds to earn a tip.

The OP got a picture, so why can't the performer get a $1 for posing?
I'm sure he will, from other people throughout the day. Hassling one guy for not is bullcrap.

Of course not. It's also not required to tip a stander.
I didnt say required. It is absolutely customary and the OP admitted that he is more than aware of that custom, therefore he is knowingly being a dipshit.

Agreed.

The point should be stander shouldn't have actually walked after him and yelled at him for not doing so.
Yes he absolutely should have. That's how the world works. You take something for nothing from a person who works for it and you will be yelled at.

Then why did OP take a pic of the guy?
It's funny to see people dance around this question. The longstanding etiquette with those performers is that if you take a picture of them, toss them a freaking dollar or even just some change.
The building comparison is ludicrous and barely merits a response. That's like saying you shouldn't tip the valet guy because you also don't tip the hotel building where you stay.
Posted on 5/20/14 at 7:23 am to Rickety Cricket
well you are already paying to stay in the building so you have already tipped her quite well.
And the guy broke character and sounds like a shitty robot. He needs to up his game and worry about his performance to see more tips.

One day you will need a painted man to stand still, and he won't come to your aid.

They're fricking scenery just like a building or a tree. They're not some great vegas act that is amazing the crowd.

They aren't scenery. They are a person working for tips. And they absolutely draw a crowd. If they didnt, they wouldnt be there. So much ignorance and stupidity in this thread.

Ok, so...you agree that in this situation someone has the right to tip or not, whatever they feel like. Then you also say that the "performer" should have pursued OP yelling for not tipping? Well, make up your mind. This guy is in a "profession" where he knows good and damn well he is "working" for tips. He is at the mercy and whim or passerbys. Someone not tipping absolutely doesn't make him in the right to talk shite.

OP didn't take anything from the guy. It's not like he reached his hand in a hat and stole money from him. He took the dude's frickin picture.
If someond didn't tip a waiter or their barber, which I imagine applies to some people here, would you advocate that person following them to the parking lot hassling them?
