quote:

Regardless, to think that a human being died for something so utterly worthless as some plastic beads is abhorrent. It is time we reevaluate our priorities and start realizing the harmful aspects of our culture.

quote:

Mardi Gras is the foundation of both our culture and economy, and I think it might be the main reason why Louisiana ranks near last in almost every measurement among the 50 states. We put Mardi Gras culture on a pedestal and refuse to see what it really is. Mardi Gras promotes drunkenness, debauchery, gluttony, pollution and general mayhem. Despite all this, we consider it a family event and we raise our children to adore this time of year.

quote:

I am boycotting Mardi Gras this year; I fail to see how it benefits anyone besides the multinational hotel chains and the political elites of this city who would rather spend our tax dollars on bringing in more tourists than creating a safe and clean environment where citizens can lead healthy, happy, and prosperous lives. New Orleans is more than a place where tourists go to party and vomit in the streets.

The writer boycotted Mardi Gras this year, bot I saw no signs that anyone missed him. I know a lot of people who don't like Mardi Gras. They have the option of staying home.

Marquis doesn’t seem to exist online...

And can’t help but notice the disconnect from their treasured memories with friends and family yet it only being for hotel companies and tourists

Yep - no trace of that name on google. Some loser giving a fake name with some kind of agenda.

I thought the crime and welfare culture along with the poor education system cheapened our city. Man, I've been wrong all this time.

He's/She's not wrong.

The thing about Mardi Gras is that it's a two faceted ritual.

Everyone loves and participates in the first part of the ritual but ignore the second part: lent.

Or to remove the religious aspects of it because it doesn't have to be religious, rather it can simply be a human thing: Mardi Gras is meant to indulge and then sacrifice. It helps you to center yourself in the world and ultimately makes you a better person.

Without the subsequent sacrifice, Mardi Gras is simply an orgy with no purpose, and that makes those that celebrate it in that manner less happy, less complete, less fulfilled individuals.
