I admire the guts this man has to say what needs to be said.

Yet another reason why teachers are worthless

LA’s educational and economical ranks show that too but I don’t hear any solutions on that front

That's the author's point.

Mardi Gras promotes drunkenness, debauchery, gluttony, pollution and general mayhem.
To me Mardi Gras promotes quality family time, intermingling of differences (varies races and classes together), and arts (music, fashion, design, culinary).

Do you go around and interview/watch people to see what they do after Mardi Gras? I know many people who give up stuff they love for lent, don't eat meat on Friday's, etc. The fast-food places don't do all of those fish sandwich advertisements post-Mardi Gras for no reason.
Also, I believe the bible says something about judging others. Happy Mardi Gras.

Yeah, it takes a lot of guts to use a fake name and say crap that doesn't make sense when Bourbon St. and the New Orleans party atmosphere exists 24/7, 365 days per year. Mardi Gras last two weeks. The person is a moron.

Just got in from a beautiful day Uptown with friends and family. Personally, this was a great Carnival season for our group. I got a kick out of reading how terrible Mardi Gras is every day from people sitting in Texas, Alabama, Georgia or North Louisiana/Baton Rouge. Then this gem today by someone who seems like a ghost. The first 3 lines of that story are complete and utter made up stupidity.
I’m out. The kiddos are wanting to play parade in the neighborhood before it gets dark. Hopefully we all make it back alive.

Lack of leadership cheapens that city more than anything else.

Can't celebrate Mardi Gras without celebrating lent.
Heathens.
Heathens.

Nobody by that name has a LA teaching certificate.
No local believes that. Only tourists who have only been to bourbon st.

The thing about Mardi Gras is that it's a two faceted ritual.

Hey man I am giving up meat on Fridays and sweets.

I may be a lowly engineer and not an accountant. But don’t tourist dollars indicate money that originated outside of Louisiana and ended up inside it?
Even on the tax collection side, if the combination of governments (state/parish/local) pulls in $10 in total revenue for every $1 spent chasing it, all of the sales taxes on that spent revenue cause the govt. to break even (more/less). And this assuming not one of the bar, police, or hotel employees collecting salaries, bar tips, etc... turns around and spends that same money in Louisiana, generating more tax income.
Mardi Gras in New Orleans is the one thing this state has that will never really be in competition with what other states. Random 21 year old kids in Montana dream of going to Mardi Gras. To me there’s a clear return on investment for the city and state to support it and find every every way to make sure that revenue steam continues.
Not to mention the plethora of hotels that exist in New Orleans on the basis of supporting the tourist parts of the French Quarter are also what makes New Orleans a stable host for Super Bowls, Final Fours, etc.... this all works together.

So many Mardi Gras drama queens. I always vomit in the toilet like a civilized person.
Blaming all of your problems on a holiday that takes up two weeks of the year is such a cop out.
There is a lot to like about Mardi Gras. Young, old, white, black, male female, gay, straight, etc are all out in the streets, despite all of the polarization going on right now, partying together in harmony (mostly). It's a great time to celebrate life, friendships, music, food, and our unique heritage.
Do people get out of hand? Hell yeah, but that's no different than any other circumstance where you get a lot of the general public together, especially for a party.

What explains the shitty education in the half of the state that doesn't take time off for Mardi Gras?

Mardi Gras is the foundation of both our culture and economy, and I think it might be the main reason why Louisiana ranks near last in almost every measurement among the 50 states. We put Mardi Gras culture on a pedestal and refuse to see what it really is. Mardi Gras promotes drunkenness, debauchery, gluttony, pollution and general mayhem. Despite all this, we consider it a family event and we raise our children to adore this time of year.
I'm going to brush up on my history, but Mardi Gras (like most holidays affiliated with a different culture or religion before Americanization) served a different purpose.
Someone already mentioned the Lent reason for it. The other is that Mardi Gras is derived from Carneval, a similar festive time in France. It was okay with the rulers of the time period because peasants in those time did laborious work 99% of the year. It's supposed to be super debaucherous because no either time was that allowed under the iron rule of the Catholic Church.

New Orleans is not the only place where Mardi Gras is celebrated. It's the most famous and traditional.
