The open floor plan has become a minefield of distractions for office workers — the incessant ringing of phones, the chatter of co-workers, typing on keyboards — all of which threaten to undermine a productive workday.

Enter the office pod.

These sleek, self-contained booths are increasingly being sought by employers and have been embraced by workers. They provide a quiet space for employees to conduct important phone calls, focus on their work or take a quick break.

“We are seeing a large trend, a shift to having independent, self-contained enclosures,” said Caitlin Turner, a designer at the global design and urban planning firm HoK. She said the growing demand for pods is a direct result of employees expressing their need for privacy.

I think open offices are bad on many levels, but is working out of a phone booth really the solution? I'm getting claustrophobic just looking at it.

My company just had a come to Jesus meeting about this. They probably wasted 250k at least on “office efficiency” studies.

We have a horribly shitty office now from the early 70s and we are moving and they just got way too creative and they’re rolling all their ideas back.

But it will be open seating. So you just have to show up early every day if you want to get a work station you want. If you don’t, youre SOL

The only people that think that is a good idea are the ones selling those shitty pods.

I’m glad I don’t have to worry about such things at the Golden Arches.

If only I could make it to where it’s like a one way glass panel, with the outside showing a giant GIF of me working. On the inside I would just frick off and be on tigerdroppings all day.

My company just moved us to some nasty old 90’s cube farm. It was sold to us as “open workspace” but it’s really just the company being cheap. Man is it shitty in there.

Frick an open floor plan.

I would get very little done with that much distraction.

Plus, i need the ability to not do a single productive thing for like 3-4 hours a day. I work quickly and get what i need to done so the other time is for Netflix and games

I didn't think companies were still doing that. How do you prepare for your workday not knowing where you will be until you get to the office?

Being an office type worker now, I have files, references, projects I work on that can't be packed up at the end of the day.

When I was in construction, the job was day to day responsibilities, so moving around didn't matter.

How does this work? Do you not have work that carries over from day to day? What about reference materials? Tools or office supplies? Personal items?

We all work together man. We share defense materials from the communal library and all our projects are paperless.

What kind of tools would we need? We are working in an office not a contradiction site.

Personal items? Those or just symbols of the man trying to keep us from working together man!

It sounds fricked up. I'm trying to imagine how it would work at my place. The computers in our office don't even have the same software, because employees have have different roles and different software.

Then there are special computers connected to special private networks which only 5 of us have access to. Those are separate from the business computer systems.

If companies want to be cheap let people work from home. No employee wants this crap.

Company could save some money and just claim these from the local junkyard and repurpose them:

I will never understand the logic behind the “bull pen” style office set up. No way I could work in that with all the noise surrounding me. At least give me some patricians.

I don't know what good they'll do, but here are some patricians.
