re: New MSY: will current structure be torn down or will the new terminal be a 2nd terminal?

For better or worse, modern New Orleans is primarily a tourism/convention economy, so it does warrant a world class airport, although I agree with the posters who have said MSY meets the basic needs of the existing flight traffic demands, although not in an aesthetically pleasing way.
Airports in New Orleans are a political vanity project anyway. You can bet the mayor and city council's names will be peppered all over the new facility.

You can really tell which posts come from leisure travelers who fly once a year.
I fly 40 weeks a year. MSY is NOT the front door to the city that we want to project to businesses. That is just one of many reasons why the new terminal is needed.

Whats going to happen to the old route?
It's going to become a ghost town.
I can't help but wonder what the airport is going to do with all the parking spaces in the current parking structure. That's a frickton of parking... And then there's all the long-term parking companies, they must have the red-arse about how this is going to increase their routes.

That's everywhere. Any local public building or facility built in the last 40 years, will have a plaque listing all of the elected officials of the entity that built said building.

You know the new airport will open right around your retirement!
I'm not wanting to move to the new airport (for personal reasons as I live closer to the old airport and parking for EVERYONE will be a nightmare at the new airport)....

Yeah there was some epic stuff going on causing the lack of people. If I remember correctly curbside was even shut down.

We are short 1000 police ( compared to other southern cities such as Bham and Houston) We don’t spend money hiring/poaching from surrounding jurisdictions for the same reason; there are no contractors to bribe so there’s not as much opportunity for graft.
And?
We aren’t using NOPD money to build the airport. The airliners are paying for almost all of it. The NOPD is short staffed because they froze hiring a while back and it’s hard to recruit, not because we’re building an airport.

Glad to have a airport like New Orleans has. Try to fly out of mobile. The rates are twice as high and it takes 30 minutes to get to the airport due to the traffic
Gulfport/Biloxi Regional is better served than Mobile.

You must not travel much. MSY is one of the shittiest airports in the country.
It currently is easy to get in and out of in any direction, very cheap nearby parking, and security is always very quick
I have no idea why a newer airport with more cool glass and other shiny objects is needed for mouthbreathers to like it......
The new terminal is going to be a fricking disaster for traffic

Yeah. Too bad we can't use FAA money and airline money and passenger fees to pay for drainage, huh?
It is too bad, that money is pissed away for political reasons. NO doesn't need a smaller airport at the same location for almost a billion, it doesn't need hundreds of millions wasted on short line street cars that almost no one uses. To get riders for the Loyola line they changed the Freret bus to dump the people at the bus station instead of letting them ride 7 more blocks to downtown.
The fact money is designated doesn't mean it can't be stupid.

The new airport will allow for a much more efficient operation
* Having one security check point vs two makes a lot of sense.
* Having a much better luggage logistics process is a great thing.
* This new terminal will allow things to work better for international flights and could help attract more of said flights. I'm guessing the customs situation will be better as well.
* I'm very much looking forward to better restaurants and bars.
I thought I read somewhere that parts of the old terminal might be used to handle more freight cargo which is a plus.
Again, the airlines are very much onboard with this project and we don't know yet after everything is built if the traffic is going to be that bad.

I agree. Half of these people bitching are the same types that whine about the city & state never investing in infrastructure. New Orleans is doing exactly that, in an arena where infrastructure improvements tend to payoff, and yet they still complain.

No they aren't.

You're right. We're using money from all over the state and country to build it.
LINK (bit outdated but a good source of info
quote:
The project includes a $650 million, 30-gate terminal financed in part with proceeds from $267.5 million of general airport revenue bonds and $207.3 million of debt supported by revenues from the airport’s passenger facility fee.
quote:
Other components of the program include an $87 million connection with Interstate 10, a $72 million central power plant financed with state capital outlay funds, and $17 million of private financing for an airport hotel.
In addition to the bond proceeds, projected financing includes $97 million of federal airport grants, $26 million from the Transportation Security Administration, $27 million of state airport funding, and $30 million of airport self-generated funds.

Yeah those numbers are way off. On the low side it's over a 990 million dollar project just for the terminal. Add in things like the new fueling system that the airlines are paying for themselves and the road work needed the true costs of the new airport is WELL beyond the billion dollar price tag.
