I've never been in any of the other ones but I know C always has a mile long line for security.
I hope they do a good job with that aspect of the new one. Shitty airports are shitty because they can't handle any volume through security

That current airport is a pile of shite. It’s embarrassing.

Some ridiculous shite in this thread. Nola airport is not noticeably worse than any airport I have been to for a city it’s size.
What are some actual reasons for its shittiness?

In keeping with the barnyard analogy and speaking as one of the cattle, it doesn’t matter whether the barn is a palace or a shed, you’re gonna get treated the same way by the airlines and security and the wonderfully helpful people in airport service industries.

will the current structure be torn down or will the new terminal be a second terminal?
It’s going to be the main shipping terminal when Amazon comes to Nola.

I agree. It’s easy to get in and out of. The only time I find it sucks is early morning flights when TSA are short on agents.

Just came back from a convention in Las Vegas. Been flying in/out of McCarran for some 40 years now, and it seems to be able to efficiently and politely handle the crush of some 50 million annual travelers in the same facility that was built in 1942 (upgraded many times, of course).

It’s functional, but not very nice relative to most airports. Feels dated with few amenities and food/beverage options. Worn flooring & seats, few charging areas, dark gates, dingy bathrooms etc. Just... old. I don’t think broken check-in kiosks or TSA lines are really much worse than anywhere else though. They did a lot of cosmetic upgrades before the 2013 Super Bowl, which helped. And Concourse D is probably my least favorite. Worst food options, beer that taste like it’s tapped from dirty lines and it all generally feels dead.
I assume the new airport will be substantially better, but it seems to have been “hidden” until just before construction. Nobody really knew it was in the works. I don’t recall hearing about public hearings, conceptual sketches, bids, costs estimates, funding sources, site options, scope, etc. It was suspiciously quiet. I’m not sure why that is or how such a massive, high profile project was able to stay under the radar.
I wonder what the cost to upgrade the existing airport would be relative to building new? I don’t think it was a matter of capacity so that may have been a viable option. And what’s the deal with Concourse A at MSY? It’s been abandoned as long as I can remember.

The NOLA apologists won't like that

It’s apples to oranges to bananas. Airline, counter agent, TSA agent, crowds that day, flight crew, etc. Same airport has lots of potential outcomes. Most of the time the mood and attentiveness of the 3-4 people you deal with from drop off to boarding makes much more of a difference than the actual airport.

Can someone tell me why a new airport was needed?
Because it was built long enough ago that the infastructure is antiquated and made operating costs too expensive.
That being said, that should have been determined before they spent hundreds of millions to renovate the airport over the years (including over $300 million in renovations unveiled in 2013). That was right before they commenced plans to get a new airport.
The real question is if the officers that patrol will actually do their jobs or if the drop off and pick up areas will continue to be filled with parked cars. Oh, and if dedicated access roads will be ready in time; otherwise, it's going to be a nightmare to get to and from the new airport.

I'd be willing to bet that the original terminal at McCarran is long gone...been in and out of there a couple of times myself
I'm surprised that a solution to fund the approach roads wasn't copied from the new Denver airport (where you have to basically have to pay to exit)
the new NOLA terminal is long overdue and should make things a lot easier...

Right up there with KCI. Talking about outdated.

Yeah. Typical Louisiana incompetence.

Long lines at the kiosks with too few workers.
Long lines at TSA with too few total and too many incompetent workers.
Bad food choices.
Dirty restroom facilities.
Just an overall dirty, smelly, shitty airport.
I travel fairly frequently and it amazes me how much better and cleaner almost every other airport in the country is.

KCI is pretty easy to get in and out of. The pros stop there. Last projection for the new airport to open is 2021.

The type of incompetence that builds a brand new rental car facility so they can get the super bowl, only to have it be rendered useless 4 years later.
