And what’s the deal with Concourse A at MSY? It’s been abandoned as long as I can remember.
It was open in the '90s. I remember flying out of it. There was a big asbestos abatement project at MSY that went on for years. I'm not sure if Concourse A was included. It only has 7 or 8 gates, and there are plenty of other unused gates (especially since Katrina), so it's not like the capacity was needed.
If I'm not mistaken, the new terminal will have actually have fewer gates than the existing terminal, if you also include the Concourse A gates.

A never reopened post Katrina.
And the new terminal will have less gates, but all behind one security checkpoint so they can effectively lease/use them.

To me, the one security checkpoint will improve the food and beverage options for travelers, but I'm not sold that it'll make getting to your gate easier.

If you are too dumb to do a little reading up on why, you're not worth responding to.

Not sure if people realize, but MSY is handling millions more passengers per year than pre Katrina.
The airport went over 12 million pax last year and is on pace to go over 13 pax this year with no slowing in sight, so it's on the upper side of a "medium sized airport." All of that is pretty much O&D with MSY not being a true focus city for anyone much less a hub.
Capacity hasn't really been the issue, but to say convenience and amenities are adequate is also disingenuous. Terminals (concourses) need to be connected post security in this day and age.
The airlines signed off on this and are helping to pay for it. Fees shouldn't go up much if at all when you factor in the savings from moving to the new terminal versus the the inefficient and antiquated old terminal.

MSY is just depressing and old. My biggest complaint, other than the depressing “feel” of the place, is the lack of food options.
That said, I have always been pleased with getting into and out of the airport to I-10. Easy access, rarely much traffic.
The only time at MSY I was really inconvenienced was when I had to park in the CC lot. That sucked, did not enjoy that walk to/from the terminal.

It will be more efficient, that for sure.

Based on word from KNEW, MSY is being repurposed into a private terminal. I’ve also heard the rental hq and parking will remain with a possible shuttle across the tarmac. Likewise, for those who fly private there is a possibility millionaire and Atlantic move into the United terminal per signature.

Speaking of KNEW, I'm actually kind of surprised that they haven't put together an incentive package to lure an LCC. Allegiant seems right up their ally.
It really wouldn't hurt MSY and it would give people especially coming from east more options.

All the complaints about the new terminal will go away once it's fully operational. It will be 1000 times better.

Allegiant is already at MSY.

Glad to have a airport like New Orleans has. Try to fly out of mobile. The rates are twice as high and it takes 30 minutes to get to the airport due to the traffic

KCI is pretty easy to get in and out of.
They were very forward looking to build it in the boonies years ago with excellent freeway access.

Runway is limited. Can’t handle some of the heavier jets at full capacity. Plus that runway with a south wind is a terrifying approach. The terminal would need 100x the upgrades MSY needs to handle commercial.

I was just at the airport this weekend. Can someone tell me why a new airport was needed? The current one is still in good shape and doesn’t seem to have any issues. Seems like a waste of taxpayer money
It wasn't needed, the only improvement will be that the 4 passengers a year that make a connectionat MSY and have to change concourses won't have to go through security again. 800 million dollars to save 40 minutes for people with bad connections.
Federal Aviation money was available so it was wasted just like we wasted Federal transportation dollars on little spur street car lines that few people use.

That is simply not true.
Msy has very small and shitty bathrooms.

You have to be kidding?? Where else in the world can you get chicken livers and mint jelly in the airport like Pralines has on concourse B? Where else has lucky dogs? Where else has Dooky's?
Have you ever been through Midway??
Food is terrible dude. I fly american mostly and all they really have is that crappy boot leg copelands place.

KNEW can’t handle heavy metal unfortunately.

Who is eating at the airport in New Orleans?
I can't imagine that there are very many flights that require a change of planes at MSY. It seems to me that the majority of passengers looking for food at an airport do it during a layover. I get that some people departing might need a last minute snack, but that isn't most passengers. The real question is who lands in New Orleans and thinks, "I know I've arrived in a city known for its food, but I think I'll see what the airport has to offer."

I will when I have a departure that’s around a meal time?

but it seems to have been “hidden” until just before construction. Nobody really knew it was in the works. I don’t recall hearing about public hearings, conceptual sketches, bids, costs estimates, funding sources, site options, scope, etc. It was suspiciously quiet. I’m not sure why that is or how such a massive, high profile project was able to stay under the radar
I don't know. They have talked about a new airport, or at least a new terminal, since the 90s. For a good part of Mitch's first term, they threw out ideas. At one point, they had 4 options, 2 of them new terminals and 2 of them renovations. Had public hearings, news about it, etc. The option they chose, I believe, was the cheapest. Apparently there was such an insane amount of retrofit needed in the back areas that a renovation just didn't make any sense.
The Aviation Board is who signed off on it, and I think (not 100 percent sure) that the NOLA City Council had to as well. But yeah, because there isn't as much study and voting required, not as much press before it started as one would expect for a project this size.

It's the smallest of the four. Post 9/11, after TSA took over security, it made more sense to concentrate on only having to staff security for three concourses. Also, the last two airlines I can remember using it, were Northwest and US Air. With Delta using D and American using C... just didn't need the gates in A anymore.
