When the new Courtyard Marriott on Florida and Third streets officially opens later today, downtown will have more than 1,000 hotel rooms to offer visitors—a long-sought milestone that tourism officials say will make the Raising Cane’s River Center more attractive to convention groups.
The hotel is downtown’s seventh and adds 135 rooms to the central business district submarket, bringing the total number of rooms to 1,176.
“This development serves a number of purposes,” says Downtown Development District Executive Director Davis Rhorer. “It achieves the goal of getting between 1,000 and 1,200 hotel rooms … it activates a key intersection in the heart of downtown for economic development activity and it achieves ‘four complete blocks’ of architecture/building development along Third Street as we rebuild the urban fabric, which was a recommendation in Plan Baton Rouge.”
They reached a milestone for hotel rooms and a grocery store, but they also lost about 3 bars just by cracking down on open container laws.

One step forward, two steps backwards. With all of these new rooms and apartments, where do these people go out at night? Happys? Uber to Perkins?

Mayor Broome mandated these nice hotels to allow low weekly rates for the poor to rent to bring equitable housing to our downtown communities

Can you imagine living out of state and finding out you get a paid work trip for a convention in Louisiana....get excited thinking it’s in NOLA....but it’s actually in BR?

While BRLA needed to upgrade its hotel offerings especially downtown I always thought that people in BR always tried to hard to make tourism a focal point of the local economy. More effort should have been made to make BRLA a better place to live and work. Focus on bringing one particular industry or subset to the area and focus on living downtown not visiting.
