Don’t listen to some of these responses. Both are very real and need treatment. But you’re going to need to get with them on how to handle the situation. This might be a life long journey but hopefully you can get some strategies to help.

Welcome to the OT!

Children that have ADHD and some other issues that are related, have brains that work in a different manner. The processing zone that helps "normal" people understand what the emotions of others are and regulate our own, create our standard human reward system and more is delayed and doesn't give that CHILD, who is already struggling to figure those things out the ability to deal well at all with their emotions etc.
Thank you Adamau! Excellent description of what many of us have experienced raising ADHD children!

Please don't listen to these idiots that say ADHD isn't a thing. Have him evaluated by one of the professionals cited in the thread.
Sometimes medications is the answer, especially if it helps the family dynamic.

unless they have lived it and seen what it can do to a child, and then come to discover that everything that you believed about parenting and you know was so vital to your personal growth as a child WILL NOT WORK FOR YOUR CHILD, they simply have ZERO idea what this is like. The level of heartbreak involved in watching your child suffer and realizing there are no good or easy answers to help is indescribable.

This is not the case at all. Maybe over diagnosed but no way it's not real.

Be very cautious with the treatment suggestions you receive. Most parents are looking for the easiest solutions and trust the medical profession pharmaceutical plans. Not saying an RX is not useful, just saying it may not be the only and best option.
From personal experience I can tell you "ADHD", when properly harnessed and controlled, is a superpower.
In the interim, if he is 8 or older, I'd suggest finding ways to burn mental and physical energy. One idea, in particular, is to learn to code with him. Once he gets going (and he will) you'll have given him a strong and marketable skill in addition to giving an outlet for his mental gymnast. A heavy dose of OCD is a great tool for this as well.
In very short order you'll see this as a gift for both of you.

Additionally, nobody is the best parent. If you are actually being a parent, you are doing it right.

I think our OP is just being humble. You can tell by the way he's discussing it he's engaged and concerned, which is probably in the top 25th percentile of parents right off the bat.

My father cured my ODD with arse whippings. As soon as the odd would pop up again I got a repeat treatment.

Before you seek any professional help, try a few things:
Take away all electronics, period save for a tiny bit of supervised television .
ABSOLUTELY NO SOCIAL MEDIA, PERIOD.
Take him outside and work his arse off EVERY SINGLE DAY without exception, rain or shine.
NO SUGARY DRINKS OR TREATS.
Enroll him in a team sport of some kind if able.
Chances are your boy is suffering from being a boy and the above will help channel his perfectly natural gifts.

quote:I have raised a few of these children also. Routine, lists, calendars, reminders, organization, consequences for actions and decisions...give them all of the tools to succeed even if it doesn't seem like it matters. It will absolutely matter as they mature and become adults. They will fall back on those things they learned but didn't always adhere to as children because they know it works. Also whether or not you decide on medications also look into sports. Soccer or track can be very effective with all the running. It is a lot harder to be defiant when you are tired (but it still doesn't go away). Also realize college or a desk job may be your dream for them but may not be what works for them. As they age votech, outdoor jobs, or salesman type jobs where you don't sit and do repetitive work all day may be more to their liking. It will be hard but so worth it when they become productive members of society!
We have routine. We set rules. We're not overly strict nor do we let him run over us. I know that I can't whip this out of him. It's beyond being just "hard-headed" and "energetic."
Personally I hate the rush to prescribe kids these drugs and the drive to take away parents' rights to discipline and teach our kids personal responsibility.

And sometimes medication is a death knell.
Shoving pills down a kids throat is the default answer for all too many people in 2022.
