re: NBA viewership down 48% over the past 12 years

It’s boring. I loved watching the NBA growing up. Shaq, Kobe, young LeBron (pre heat days), etc. we’re all insanely fun to watch. This whole “3 or die” nonsense has made it incredibly boring to watch. The “stars” are more annoying to watch/keep up with than fun.

I quit watching because it has been culturally appropriated from the white christian inventor.

The NFL model is perfect, except for TNF
Theres no reason that I can watch basically every FBS college game every week without having to jump through all sorts of ridiculous hoops of extra subscriptions and such but not the nfl. It’s insane.

That blows me away, especially considering the fact that they just inked that monster whale TV deal.
The brand of ball they’re playing is sound, but it is boring to watch. Dunks and 3s is the object every time down. There’s no beauty in the game. The last of that was the Warriors with KD. I saw them play live and though I hated them, they were the most impressive ball movement I have ever seen.
NBA has moved to a league of giants. Everyone is long and tall, they cover the court like nothing, and the analytics show that you shoot 3s or get dunks if you want to win. Not much else matters with this type of talent pool.

"The NBA Cup"
What a stupid fricking idea.

Some of it prob has to do with the fact that they travel all over the place without getting called, they flop everywhere, and don’t play defense.
I hate that extra step or hop (or 2) they get going towards the basket, and I miss when they only could play man to man defense, when hand checking wasn’t strictly enforced, and when a little more physical play was tolerated. They also took too long to address flopping and maybe still haven’t addressed it enough.
They over shifted the rules to favor offense and less physical play like football is doing. The changes initially help up to point in both leagues, but instead of staying in that sweet balanced spot they keep pushing things over and over.

quote:Personally, the Celtics really dampened my casual fandom last season as it was clear all year they'd win the title and sure enough no one even took them to 6 games. Just boring dominance.
The last series I really enjoyed watching was 2009 Bulls v Celtics.
My viewership is down 100% since then.
Aside from that, the Nuggets run in '23 (especially the Suns series) was really fun to watch, and the '22 playoffs were very fun until the Warriors shut down the Mavs. 2021 was probably my favorite though with the Bucks winning it all and both 1 seeds knocked out in the second round.
The NBA's problem isn't the product, it's the regular season being relatively irrelevant (thanks to load management bullshite) and the playoffs themselves are already plenty at two full months. I'm also not sure it's a "problem" worth solving as the NBA is financially fine and the demand for more and more live sports is only growing.

I'll say this as gently as possible....
I don't feel that it's a "my people" type of sport, if you know what i mean.
They've pretty much made it clear that they don't want people like me watching. I don't see why I wouldn't oblige them.

A lot of people will argue this, but analytics have ruined basketball and baseball. 3s, dunks, homeruns, walks.
Sure it wins games but by distilling the game down to that level it just sucks to watch.
Say what you will about the football (which is leaning into it some but still watchable) and soccer but at least there's still some fun and identity there.

Last series I watched was the mid-90’s Reggie Miller Pacers vs the NY Nicks. fricking real basketball that punished clowns driving the middle for layups and dunks.
I can’t watch this current bullshite. Straight garbage play with a heaping help of woke and white guilt.

No connection between casual fans and the league and more importantly the players. There is way too many unlikable players.

How much has overall cable viewership fallen over the past 12 years?
Ask the NFL and CFB.

The last time I watched NBA was the yr the Sonics won the championship.

Ask the NFL and CFB.
Also the NFL is only cable once a week - and they've been simulcasting to ABC for a decade now to inflate those viewership numbers

Why do you think the NBA audience has disappeared?
They don't play defense until the playoffs.
American fans don't understand the stars sitting games out for fitness.
Blatant disregard for traveling, double dribble, or any basic rule we were all taught when younger.
Those are my guesses as far as gameplay.

Terrible product. No defense

viewership of who? America only?
because every other report i've read states that basketball is growing on a global level like crazy, especially China. that could be why the contracts are still bloated, but viewership (in america) is down. obviously, someone is still watching it.
my guess is, the Asian market is growing rapidly
