I think there are kind of 4 camps:

1) People with poor news consumption habits, e.g. too much cable, which tends to emphasize bad news and isn't very numerate.

2) People who don't want to get others' hopes up.

3) People for whom pessimism is a coping mechanism.

4) People who are bought into a narrative of American institutions failing.

The "tell" that someone is in category 4 is that that they tend to emphasize how the US is doing uniquely poorly compared to, say, Europe, when that just objectively isn't true.

There are a few of these folks on this board. Any sort of good news or positive trends you bring up are dismissed. An example is rocket31. He came into every thread I started on Italian curve flattening and insisted it wasn’t getting better.

More a combination of 1 and 3, IMO.

He should have added

"5. Sure, the virus numbers are getting better but in a week we'll all be living under the interstate and eating our young to survive."

Owe is just a naive rube. Unknown is praying for failure.

Accurate, except for the timeline.

One week is too soon.

More like two weeks.

He just wants millions to die to hurt Trump. That and he is a simpleton.

Go to the polifrick board. Those low foreheads get so creamy over "American institutions failing" they stick to the frickin' sofa. They believe every goddamn American institution we have has failed.

There are also preppers who truly hope this virus is the event that will finally put them at the top of the food chain.

Eh. It's easier than that. They shoehorn Trump in every conversation possible. Then you have the other side who calls everyone a liberal and just makes it worse.

"America is failing because of Trump!"

"No, America is failing because of liberal pussies like you!"

Around and around we go.

6) People that think the government is going to quickly make them whole for any loss of income so the longer the process plays out, the more free paid vacation!

Reality is starting to hit on that score, though, so the numbers are dropping.

7) People that, for whatever reason, seem to be happy that everything is shut down and people are worried.

People in this category probably are pretty miserable in every day life and are thrilled that the rest of us "get to live in their world", so to speak.

8) Authoritarians.

Self-explanatory. Not only the current events but the public's general unconditional and unquestioning acceptance has made this whole thing like Super Christmas for them.

I think this is a good list.

I chuckle at group 3. They have to lie to themselves because they are unable to handle disappointment or negative reality. You see it all the time.

Groups 1 and 4 encompass democrats.
