Nashville, it's a no brainer. The only way you go near Memphis is if you live in Collierville or Hernando, MS.

Martin's. For BBQ in Nashville just go to Martin's.

I actually prefer Memphis in 2016. Nashville's allure has kind of passed -- the city is full of bland cnodos, and the cost of living is high. Memphis has a lot of cool things going on, has a better urban infrastructure, is dirt cheap, has new restaurants being open all the time, and is just generally more interesting than Nashville. Crime is awful, but shouldn't be a huge issue if you're in Midtown.

Nashville is bland and white-bread. If you like a little dirty / grit, choose Memphis.

Agreed. I live in Nashvile and can already tell that this place is on the decline. Growth is slowing and a lot of young people are leaving. I'd recommend Memphis too. Most people in this thread are basing their opinion on stereotypes rather than actual experience

West Memphis, ie the actual worst place in the Western hemisphere

2nd worse. I have been to East St Louis and NOWHERE in this country is as bad, Ferguson,MO is where people go when they make it out of East St Louis. People I know from there do not go back, they have reunions in St Louis or Ferguson. It is that bad.

ETA: OP, there is zero reason to pick Memphis over Nashville.

I lived in Midtown in the mid 90s. It was sketchy as frick then. I can only imagine living there now...
Collierville beats any place I can think of in N MS as well. Nashville would probably be better for someone who was not born in either city. You have to know people and places in Memphis before it is really cool.

Lets say for a young professional either just out of college or a few years out and single, is there a single / cool bar scene in Memphis?

Memphis does have some good bars. Midtown and Downtown has some great ones. Memphis is a great town if you like bars. But in the same way as New Orleans, there's a lot of hell that goes with it.

The single scene is simply ok and pales in comparison to Nashville.

It seems to be Birmingham is leaving Memphis in the dust these days when comes to a cool place to live.

I've lived in Birmingham as well. Bars and young single life, Memphis blows Birmingham out of the water in this regard. I know B-Ham is going through its own little Renaissance, but it's no where near Memphis here. Birmingham may be preferable when you're in your early 30s and married, but not so much single.

Birmingham area is a great place to raise a family, as long as you are not in Birmingham proper. It is basically the exact same thing as Memphis without as much cool stuff worth risking your life to do. We live quietly in our OTM haven and the only person in my family who actually spends any time in Birmingham is me.

I've heard that around 200 people move here every day.
