What the hell kind of thread is this?

If you want to live in a nice area in Memphis you have to move out of Memphis.

Nashville by far. Quality of life much better. However, all of the good things come with a high cost of living.

Move to Memphis where it might be slightly cheaper to live there with the same compensation you would have had in Nashville. Plus you'd be right across the river from Arkansas where they have the Ozarks

There a reason it's cheaper to live in Memphis. The same reason it's cheaper to live in Haiti.

I didn't realize the Ozarks were in West Memphis, ie the actual worst place in the Western hemisphere

I used to live in the Memphis area.

Nashville is a nicer town than Memphis. I'm not exaggerating when I say that if all of the big Fortune 500 companies left Memphis, it would be just as crappy as New Orleans.

well this thread has made it perfectly apparent that you have never been to both cities before.

This isn't just a "not even close" kinda thing, it's a landslide. As in, unless memphis is doubling or tripling what you'd make in nashville, you'd be insane to live there over nash.

Memphis is perhaps the worst city south of the Mason Dixon line and Nashville is one of the best.

New Orleans is Memphis without any of the white collar jobs, upward mobility, and Fortune 500 companies.

I've worked extensively in both cities so I've spent many, many days in each.

Comparing Memphis to Nashville is like comparing Kay Jewelers to Tiffany's.

If you have the choice, pick Nashville. You would NOT regret it.

From your ludicrous description you'd think you were talking about Dallas or some place with an actual economy.

Memphis has some nice suburbs. Nashville is a far, far nicer town.

Easy choice IMO.

Most cities have the "bad" part of town, Memphis has the "good" part of town.

I had to look it up. There are more Fortune 500 companies in Memphis than in the entire state of Louisiana.

Just to point out how far behind New Orleans and Baton Rouge are. Memphis is head of us. Memphis.

Anyone familiar enough with these two places to compare them? What would be the pros and cons of actually living in each (i.e. not just there for a tourist's visit)? No kids so schools wouldn't be an issue.

I already have an idea of where this is going to go, but I'm hoping that someone will come through with some solid information, as I'm currently facing a tough job decision.

Having grown up around Memphis, it's no contest that it's worse in pretty much everything. Unless you have a career involved in logistics ahead of you, move to Nashville any day of the week over Memphis. Name just about anything at random, and I can just about guarantee Memphis is worse. The BBQ and the Zoo are the only things coming to mind in what beats Nashville.

It's really not.....and the people who live there know it's not the center of the universe. That's another advantage it has over New Orleans.

But still, as a former Memphian I have to agree that Nashville is a really appealing town and better in most ways.
