I'll cast my vote for Nashville over Memphis. It is the superior city, imo.
Memphis = Deep South.
Nashville = Upper South.
The two cities are culturally different. Always have been. East Tennessee and Middle Tennessee get along fine together, but West Tennessee has always been the bastard of the state. Memphis gets a lot of hate from the middle and east portions of the state because the racial make-up and criminal stats of the city. It's not uncommon to hear it referred to as "Memfrica."
I've never had a bad time in Memphis, but I've never spent more than a few days at a time there. If pay is the same, I'd pick Nashville over Memphis 100% of the time. If the pay is noticeably higher in Memphis, I would consider it. To quote the classic Joe Dirt, "Home is what you make it."
