No, a tabletop exercise is basically a structured step by step walkthrough.

Why wouldn’t you just do all of those things more easily and cheaply on Earth?

Did you miss the part about the asteroid hitting and needing a lifeboat?

It's Ender's Game. All of the contestants will learn afterwards that it was a real game.

As long as we have Bruce Willis on the asteroid and Billy Bob Thornton running the operation from Earth, we’re good.

Clearly we would all just work together like reasonable adults

What is an asteroid going to do to the Earth that we couldn’t better prepare for on this planet?

With an asteroid hitting the Earth; dust and smoke rising in the atmosphere prevents sunlight from reaching our world and causes the total temperature to drop. This event can lead to the death of many living things. If an asteroid the size of an apartment hits Earth, this blow could possibly destroy a small city.

If an asteroid were to strike land or a shallow body of water, it would eject an enormous amount of dust, ash, and other material into the atmosphere, blocking the radiation from the Sun. This would cause the global temperature to decrease drastically.

Sounds like a cure for global warming.

NASA has held a tabletop exercise this week in which planetary defence officials pretend an asteroid is about to hit the Earth in order to see how key players respond.

Billions of dollars worth of tech at NASA , and they're playing RISK?
